Re: BT line repaired but half the download speed

Ah! So not always 4000 wink

Normally I would say after the fault your Target SNR Margin had been raised reducing the connection speed. But your earlier image shows 7db which looks like you are on a 6db standard default - so that's out...

Update...

Reconnected router this morning and got a sync of 4864. With a bit of luck the DSLAM should ramp up to a 4Mb IP Profile in a day or two.
After the line repair I did get an 4Mb IP Profile for a while until I carelessly rebooted the router to see if I could get more; should have left well alone.

Haven't seen my BT mate yet; he may be able to tell me what they did when they got the line reconnected. Can't see how they would have affected it so badly if they had reconnected the same wire that fell off.

Mike.

Further update...

Back to 4MB IP Profile now and getting download speed just below that...

Will live with that for now until I can get something else sorted. VM won't do anything about it as it's within my 3.5-7.5MB range for my distance from the exchange.

Oh well, it's better than 3MB.

Mike.

Over the last couple of years, three seperate pair swaps has seen my attenuation increase from around 34 to 43. Another swap today reversed that trend and I gained a huge half a decibel!
When the cables etc were first installed there must have been a huge amount of redundancy built in but over the decades, the take-up of private telephones, the age of the installations and the change of land use (Leading to accidental damage and necessary diversions etc) have taken a serious toll. Broadband over PSTN has only served to exacerbate the problems.
The simple topography of the area where I live means that it would be hugely expensive and massively disruptive to all to replace all but the shortest of cable runs. Over those years, housing, industrial and transport etc etc developments and regulatory changes mean that any real improvement is probably impossible to achieve.
I suspect that most of the country is in a similar position and while there are still spare pairs, swapping will continue. Fibre will probably ensure that those left behind will suffer even more.
