Wiring 2nd/3rd Extensions.

Just a quick question.
If Wiring up 2nd or 3rd Phone extensions is it best to wire the extensions from the Master Socket (Standard NTE5) or wire from the Extension already in.

I.e Master - Extension 1 - Extension 2 - Extension 3 or
Master - Extension 1, Master - Extension 2, Master - Extension 3.

Or does it not make a lot of difference.

Assuming only one phone will be used at a time, no difference. The second choice would be a star layout and would use excessive cable.

Bear in mind you can only have four REN devices to the line (four ringing devices), such as phone, fax, bell. As far as I know, a DECT base unit with multiple handsets counts as one REN device.

The approved method is the daisy-chain approach, as in your first example.

If you also have a broadband service on that telephone line, any wiring method other than the daisy-chain technique will have a deleterious effect on the broadband sync speed.

You can have as many devices on the line as you want, but for ringing to work the total REN value must not exceed 4. Typically a phone which uses line power for ringing will be 0.5 to 1, external bells can be 2, DECT phones are often rated at 0.25 or even 0.

Do NOT use the second option. You will end up with three set of wires in each IDC terminal and that is outside their design parameters. They are designed to operate with just one or two. Putting a third in, can cause contact problems with both the final insertion and the second.

Just the base unit. The handsets are not "connected" to the line.

Just the base unit. It is anything that presents a direct load to the ring cadence sent down the line and depending on the value of that load a REN figure will be given. A DSL modem will have a REN of 0.

In practice, you can normally exceed 4 but performance is not guaranteed.

Standard UK ring cadence is 400ms ring, 200ms silence, 400ms ring, 2000ms silence and then repeated. The old ring generators used to have three outputs, off set by 0, 1000, 2000 ms.

Somewhere I still have the old TIG documents (superseded by SINs) which defined Ring Generation and network tones.

BS6305 contain the definition of Ring Equivalence Number.

Do neither!

Just put a triple cordless system in with base station on Master or existing Extension 1. That way you cannot affect the BB.
