Re: Faceplate Wiring HEELP!

Need some more photo's I'm afraid....

1 of the 'working' socket carefully taken apart, showing what, if anything is connected to the front plate, and a second of what cables and terminations are behind the working socket.

If also you can locate the external feed point, usually grey in colour, and some pictures of the outside and inside of this.

I still reckon the previous owners had two lines, and that the point you wish to be live is fed on a seperate feed cable.

Probably the easiest suggestion, would be to speak to an Openreach engineer you pass and ask if they would mind taking a look. Don't be offended if they say no, they can lose their job if caught doing a 'private'.

Are there meant to be any wires connected to this?

The one that is working you mean, in which case wired fine for a line with a single socket, and others sockets seem even more likely to be a second line now

Looks like a NTE5 in the small bedroom (?) with white/blue and blue/white connected to A&B at the back.

No reason to believe that if you created an extension using that faceplate that it would not work.

You need to understand the other wiring, and not end up inadvertently adding a few km of extra wire to the existing phone line by randomly wiringin the other sockets.

If you connected wires to 2, 3 (optional) and 5 you could run them to an extension socket from the master socket, yes.

This telephone wiring guide might be useful; http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/Telecoms/Telep...

You will need the proper tool to connect wires to the removable faceplate on the NTE5 master socket and to extension sockets. A search on eBay for 'IDC tool' will produce many results.

Good luck!

I believe the OP wishes to use an extension socket in the "small bedroom" - are you suggesting that he installs new additional wiring from the working NTE5's faceplate to an extension socket in the "small bedroom"? That would be an easy solution but would however leave a lot of current redundant wiring unused...

If the wiring doesn't go from the master socket to the bedroom then new wiring's going to be needed, isn't it? If the existing wiring isn't where it's wanted then it is redundant, yes.

If there is wiring that goes from the master socket downstairs and from the bedroom socket upstairs to a common and accessible connection point then it may be possible to get both sockets working - one as a master and one as an extension, without running a new cable between them.

But that is the essense of the problem since we don't know how the property is wired and your post, although valid in respect to wiring an extension, doesn't really help with that issue smile

Hi, May be nothing, but when trying to view your pictures, there is a McAfee warning on your pics - link provided. Do you have any virus etc problems? Cheers, Les.
