Re: Faceplate Wiring HEELP!

Unscrew the rearmost part of the socket that works so that you can look into the wall box behind.

There should be two wires connected to the terminals on the rear of the socket. Leave these connected.

These two wires will be part of a larger cable which may have four, six or eight cores.

Are there any other cables which come into the wall box which aren't connected to anything?

If there are, posting a picture here would be useful.

In the small bedroom, look at the back of the rearmost part of the socket (as in http://i47.tinypic.com/65bgip.jpg) and confirm that there are no wires connected to the screw terminals on the socket. I'm pretty sure there aren't from the picture.

If that is the working master socket (NTE5) do not remove those screws and mess with the wires at the back!!!

I don't know if they are connected. I will recheck later.

If they are not connected what must I do?

If they are connected then what?

You'll need to find where the other end of the cable goes to whatever. It may come out in the wall box behind the working master socket if you're lucky. That's why you need to pull the working socket out of its box and look for other cables.

Do you own any sort of multimeter which can test for continuity?

Well, if you're going to start trying to work out which wires go where, if any are behind the working socket, you'll need something.

It needn't be expensive, something like this should work.

I think you basically have two choices at the moment:

1) Get a qualified telephony engineer to come and sort out all the various non-working sockets and connections and thus utilise the existing house wiring.

2) Install an extension (a good quality telephone extension kit) yourself from the current working master faceplate to a socket in the small bedroom - a phone, if required, and the router could then be connected to that socket in the small bedroom. This would at least get you up and running at minimal expense and in due course the house wiring could be thoroughly attended to.

(A third choice might be to keep the router near to the current working master socket and use cat5e cable to connect to the computer in the small bedroom and, again in due course, the house wiring could be thoroughly attended to.)
