Do you actually need the sky box connected to the phone line?

I don't know, i always thought that the box had to 'check in' every now and then and updates always came that way??

The suggested front plate for upstairs says that it is unfiltered but you say that I won't need a filter with the modem plugging straight into the ADSL plug, is the filtering provided by the way it is wired downstairs??
That's correct. The faceplate and interstitial filters provide centralised filtering. Everything connected to the phone socket or the terminals with numbers is already filtered, including the extension wiring itself.

If the NTE5 socket is a true master socket, with all extensions connected to its faceplate (check: does every extension socket go dead when you pull the faceplate out of the NTE5?), you don't need any plug-in filters after installing the faceplate or interstitial filter.

The only unfiltered connection is the pair to the RJ11 socket (block on the interstitial filter / A and B terminals on the faceplate filter), which you need for your ADSL modem or router.

So the fiace plate does allo f the filtering for you, fab. Looks like I better get the credit card out soon.

The very first thing that needs to happen, is for you to your set up right. That unfiltered extension to the Sky will be causing the noise, and naffing up your broadband. It is the single most common broadband fault I come across.

Have the microfilter in the master socket before the jack that takes the feed to the Sky box and the phone.

Do this, see how it all works out, and come back if you still find you need to squeeze a tad more speed out of it all. smile

It's just an "interactive" thing during the minimum term as far as I know... smile

If you have SKY multiroom (now called multiscreen) you must keep all boxes connected to the phone otherwise you do not.

If you wish to use the interactive facilities (view SKY bills etc) it needs to be connected. Very, very, very few people use this.

Software updates have always been dellivered over the satelilte link.

Authorisation / ordering of pay per view items used to be solely over phone line. However with the latest version of software and a 890 or 895 SKY box pay per view works over the network (provided the box is connected to the internet so that on-demand is working).

BT Infinity 2 - IP profile 77 / 20 - super fast!
Previously BE Unlimited - 21,000 Download 1,200 Upload but then moved house - 6,500 Down, 1Mb/s up - gutted!
Ex <n>ildram , been to SKY MAX - 15,225 Download

Wow I never knew this or have seen it elsewhere but I will give this a go first over the next couple of days.

Thanks

It was my first suggestion too:
In reply to a post by David_W:
From what you describe, the extension to the Sky box is unfiltered, which is not helping, not least because the sort of plug-in extension you describe often does not use twisted pair cable. Before doing anything else, change the order around: plug the filter into the master socket, the Sky extension into the filter, and the phone into the socket on the Sky extension. Has that helped with the disconnections when the phone is in use?

However, I wish I'd drawn more attention to this. Zarjaz is spot on with his suggestion - and he makes it from a great deal of 'real world' experience. If you try filtering that Sky extension as we've described (or, if you're not using it, just unplug it), you'll see the effects of proper filtering. You can then decide whether to tidy everything up by fitting a centralised filter as I described. I think faceplate filters are well worthwhile: they're the tidiest setup electrically and aesthetically.
