Re: OpenReach and master socket/ drop line wiring

In the long term would the loft be the most convenient place for the NTE5 master socket?
The master socket in the loft was an NTE5 but, I replaced it with a pre-filtered extension faceplate. I have bought a brand new NTE5a socket though, along with an OR vDSL mk2 iPlate which will be fitted in place of the current configuration this weekend.

This gets confusing.

Is there no master (NTE5) at the moment?

(Best not to refer to the VDSL2 interstitial faceplate as a kind of iPlate, even though the "i" is probably for "interstitial" in "iPlate". The OR iPlate is purely a ring wire filter).

You mean one of these interstitial plates e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/GENUINE-BT-Openreach-Interst... that you will be fitting together with the new NTE5a and the NTE5 back box (demarcation point) remains currently wired to the junction box?

Er yes there's one in the lounge... But it's not connected to the drop wire.

The 'new' master socket in the loft did start life with an NTE5 but,I wanted to simplify the connection and essentially have the cable from the drop wire connected directly to the RJ11 socket of the face plate. So I fitted what's know as a pre-filtered socket. ADSLNation and Pressac make them.

Hope that clears that up. smile

Yes, that's right. Although 'junction box' is being kind. It's a piece of grey plastic screwed to the outside of the house, to protect the cabling from the elements. It's not sealed in anyway though!

I did I thought obviously mean an NTE5 in the live wiring frown.

I do know what ADSL Nation sell, and find the term "pre-filtered socket" amusing.

I expect what you are going to do will work, as long as you are better at wiring up than explaining it tongue smile.

Indeed.

All re-wired now. New NTE5a socket and box fitted along with the OR vDSL2 mk2 faceplate. And mounted on a board along with the modem, router and an Gbit switch. Looks so much tidier!
After a bit of recon last night, it appears that it maybe longer until I get FTTC than I was anticipating. So I may try the HG612 modem on my ADSL line to see if it improves things.

Cheers,

Paul
