Slow Speed whilst using NORDVPN

I posted in the hardware forum about a slow Asus RT-N66U which I have discovered is down to NORDVPN. (non connected speed 35mbps, connected speed 8mbps).
Tried contacting NORD and all they told me to do was use an open vpn router (which the Asus is!).
I've also tried using different servers and altering the QOS.
The speed issue is both wireless and ethernet related (other people have had issues on wifi only).
I'm quite happy to get another router if the issue is with the router but don't want to end up spending the money if it doesn't fix the issue.
Any thoughts please?
PS I'm not that tech savvy so responses in laymens terms appreciated

You could eliminate your router as being the cause of the problem by installing OpenVPN on a laptop, PC, etc and with VPN disabled on the router check the speeds you see when using the device and connecting via VPN.

It is not unusual to see slower speeds when accessing the internet via a public VPN. This can be for a number of reasons including the location of the actual VPN server to which you are connecting and possible contention both along the route or at the VPN server.

Looking at the N66U spec it seems its only got a single core 600MHz CPU, is that correct? If so then you wont get much faster than that using OpenVPN as its very CPU intensive. I sometimes use a router model GL-MT300N-V2 with OpenWRT on them as VPN routers, similar spec to the N66U but in mini form and they max out at 10mbs with VPN on, average 8mbs though.
On one of my AC68U's I use PPTP protocol rather than OpenVPN and its much faster but not as secure going by googling, but I'm no expert.

Thanks for that. That makes sense with what I�ve been reading. The only reason I�m wanting to use the vpn is to use with a firestick. I�ll try installing it directly onto that.

Hi, much better installing the app on the stick as long as its not first gen stick as they can struggle, I just use the app where possible.

Thanks, it�s a 4K stick. Just got it on prime day which is why I�ve installed the vpn.
