Re: Question about ISP routing

[re: XGS_Is_On] [link to this post]

The route to Liverpool is a mess. Aorta/Liberty Global seem to be advertising it out of at least 4 different interfaces across 2 different routers at equal cost, and those paths then go via both Manchester and Brentford before disappearing into an MPLS cloud and taking 18 ms to get to Liverpool and back.

I'll ping a friend that works for them. This is ugly.

10 uk-lon01b-ri1-ae-3-0.aorta.net (213.46.174.45) 12.652 ms
uk-lon01c-ri2-ae-5-0.aorta.net (213.46.175.101) 14.163 ms 12.183 ms
11 * * *
12 uk-lon01c-ri2-ae-4-0.aorta.net (84.116.135.50) 13.187 ms
manc-ic-3-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net (62.253.174.98) 19.858 ms
uk-lon01c-ri2-ae-6-0.aorta.net (84.116.136.98) 14.833 ms
13 * * *
14 brnt-ic-3-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net (62.253.174.114) 12.801 ms * 13.158 ms
15 * * *
16 live-cmts-32-pc1-650.network.virginmedia.net (213.104.74.90) 30.946 ms * 31.133 ms

EDIT: Just for explanation the trace hits 2 Liberty Global / Aorta routers, one of them send the data straight to VM Manchester the other to another Liberty Global router in London which then sends the data, eventually, to VM Brentford. The path from Manchester to Liverpool seems to take an age, the path from Brentford to Liverpool isn't much better.

That's insane, I'm double the distance to London:

I guess there's nothing I can do about it then.. virgin hold a monopoly in my area I don't have any other choice

Though the technician did mention their network is so old and outdated at this point and their currently installing new fibre cables with liverpool being the first city but I'm guessing that won't be anytime soon

Think he said their testing it in scotland at the moment, just seems bizarre to me that my routing has changed so much due to a simple hardware change

The work is in progress all over Liverpool. Check out https://mastdatabase.co.uk/maps/streetworks/
