Old grey Tunstall Telecom Piper customer call box query

This is an entirely separate question to that in my other post about care alarms.

A couple of years ago I moved home and the property I'm in has a Grey Tunstall Telecom Piper communication box on the wall. Ironically I'm familiar with these because back in the day my Mother was a Residential care warden and she had a master device that plugged into them.

My question is, why would I have been told in 2024 that these Tunstall Piper communication boxes could not be removed - has anyone got any ideas as to why this would be?

I receive my broadband from Virgin Cable and last time i looked Openreach services were limited here. We have another provider now called Toob, who I noticed is now offering 2.3Gbps broadband, with their main product being 900Mbps, so I've got some scope to move from Virgin Media now.

Unfortunately, most things electrical in my home which I rent are supplied via mini trunking, including the wiring to the Tunstall device.

Perhaps the landlord / TMO / ALMO doesn’t want to have wiring disruptions/ changes, or the cost thereof, so have opted to just have a policy of ‘please leave alone’ in case another tenant wishes to use the type of services provided by said box.

Do you know if the old type 1980's grey Tunstall Piper units are still in use today and do they take up a phone line to operate? Are there any reasons they could not be easily disconnected that you know of?

I think you’d be pretty safe taking it out - highly unlikely to be serving anyone now, and especially as it’s your residence / your phone line.

If it's an external communicating system, it's unlikely to work on digital voice.
