Which points more towards the its congestion in the BT Wholesale or Orange (rented from BT Wholesale) network conclusion.
If congestion, one would expect speeds to be better around 3am to midday, slowing down as school kids get home

To others helping, what do you reckon to the upstream 2.3dB noise margin? (Livebox does report some stats in tenths). Orange does now default Margin to 3 dB. 2.3 looks like a nighttime reading, but I dunno.
1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 17 Meg Untweaked 19 Meg Tweaked WBC

Not funny, that is the behaviour of a router when it sees a noise spike, and with a 3dB target margin this may be too often.
Speedtests may be 1.8Meg, but the modem says connected at 9.6Meg, what does www.speedtester.bt.com say your IP Profile is now?

Something new I have learned, thanks
Download speedachieved during the test was - 405 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4000-21000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :9622 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1159 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 8489 Kbps
I have just noticed the Continue button and found another test "Tap3" is this needed.

1) Get a new router out of them.
2) If that don't work, then request Orange contract a BT Open Reach engineer to come and check your wiring out, and the connection @ your local BT Exchange.
3) BT are currently offering a better phone rental/calls & broadband package that beats most ISPs, if you don't download a lot - as over 10GB monthly usage results in a charge of £5 per 5 Gb. First 4 months free!

Good luck!
