Change of FTTP Product

[link to this post]

I am very happy with my present FTTP provider. I have however been looking at moving from 330 FTTP to 1GB. I understand that this will require me to agree to a new minimum term contract. I have no difficulty with this other than I am not being offered the new contract discounted offer. I see parallels here with the insurance sector.

Do ISPs want to encourage customers to look elsewhere? FWiW, I can get the same FTTP service - albeit with a 18 months minimum term - for £14 a month less. Both services run on OR lines.

Can you reveal who your current provider is? are you still in contract with this provider?

As I say I am not unhappy with my ISP, just its contract renewal terms.

I asked the question and the ISP has responded with its offer. It is now up to me to stick with what I have; take out a new minimum contract term with my existing ISP or migrate to A N Other.

I just think that the sector is in need of much overdue change. I accept that the Regulator of one sector might think that denying existing customers the same deal as new customers is unfair and it may act accordingly, whereas another sector Regulator might think that frequent switching is indicative of a competitive market.

I would be interested to hear what other broadband users think?

There is an ISP offering half price for 6 months with 12 month contract. It would probably be abuse of the offer to change speed every year to get 25% off the price.

I don't think this is comparable to insurance, where the players are not open about introductory prices

If its the one I'm thinking of they confirmed this to me which is very fair.
Any offers that we may run, based on our current business practices, are for new customers and those who have have been with us for 3 years or more, as we believe this both encourages new business and rewards loyalty.

Might not apply to all though since "they" are not longer offering 40/10 FTTP - perhaps one would have to re-contract after 3 years to a 80/20 deal in order to get the discount since that may be the future offer being run?

I have no intention of giving the name of the ISP. As I said, I asked the question and it has provided me with an answer. The issue for me is the requirement to enter into a new minimum term contract so to all intents and purposes I am being treated by the ISP as if I was a new customer. I should add that this is not mentioned in the ts and cs.

I could switch to Other ISPs and get a contract with the same minimum term for £14/month less or go to one which charges £3/month less and provides me a wifi 6 router worth >£100 (retail price).

In sum, what I am saying is that my present ISP’s policy is encouraging me to look at other options. If I decide to leave, I will do so with no ill feeling. What I won’t do is attempt to play one ISP off against another.

If others see no need for change, then I accept that I am something of an outlier.

How far are you into the contract that you have now?
your best bet is to wait until the contract is almost over and then ask them what they can offer you to renew your contract but at a higher speed, if not then tell them you will go elsewhere.

That is what I would do.

I don't know why you are so bothered about telling us what provider it is, not that I care.

I am 14 months past the end of my contract so that isn’t a concern. You are right, I am looking at other FTTP providers which I was rather hoping not have to do.
