NoIP disabled account for abuse and will not discuss

[link to this post]

NoIP has blocked the NoIP account I was going to use for remote support at my elderly parents house and will not discuss. They say its due to the activity of a malicious host. I set up the account some 18 months ago with the intention of being able to set up remote access for support. However the expected migration to full fibre did not materialise and the account has not been used, let alone had any "malicious host" associated with it that we are aware of. I am now at that point again where the contract is due to expire in a few weeks and am getting things organised (move to full fibre, move to VOIP, telecare etc) and among other things tried logging into the NoIP account, but only to discover it had been disabled. As recently as about 3 months ago I had been responding to the e-mails they send you to keep the account active.

I understand that its a free service and they can pretty much do anything they like, but its been disabled for abuse and it feels like we are being treated like criminals.

gUnfortunately I think the account may be lost. However, I am reaching out to see if anyone has any ideas why this might have happened without our being aware of it?

Has anyone had their NoIP account disabled for abuse without any explanation?

Is there any other trustworthy ddns service that anyone can recommend?

Is there any legal redress? I am not in the US. My concern here is not so much that a free account has been lost, but that is has been shut down without warning or explanation and NoIP have so far refused to provide any evidence of the "malicious activity" that they are accusing us of or to discuss the matter further. They have evidently associated us with the "malicious activity" and will not admit to an error. My concern is that our being incorrectly associated with this "malicious activity" may have other repercussions.

I am thinking my best bet is to find an ISP that can provide a static IP address, but there are not many that do that anymore. Our existing ISP, PlusNet no longer do. One ther possibility is to figure out what the IPv6 address is and use that instead (I understand those are fixed), although at this point I am not sure if the PN router supports it?

For DDNS, I have used www.changeip.com for a number of years. I am also lucky enough to have a plus.net static IP address.

I have a raspberry pi that keeps the DDNS up to date.

A proper implementation of IPv6 would give you a fixed prefix and both a fixed and a random address, but it appears that plus net give you a static prefix only if you have static IPv4, so I think that you might need to consider another ISP

Exactly what I was going to do once I get her new broadband ISP sorted, hopefully with an install in the next 3-4 weeks. The idea is to have an access point to ssh or VPN in and be able to remotely view/support/administer devices on her network, but also it can run a DDNS client.

Indeed, I believe PlusNet stopped doing static IP addresses a couple of months back but to get full fibre we will need to leave them anyway and choose another ISP. I will keep the IPv6 requirement in mind when choosing another one.

I've used freedns.afraid.org for a few places in the past.

It always did the job. No troubles that I remember, except for periodically logging in to keep the system alive.

Thank you. Will have a look at them.

Thanks. Useful to know. Unfortunately they don't offer a broadband-only contract. We had intended to move the landline to A&A VOIP. We could still run with Vodafone, but would either have to move the landline to them or provision and pay for a new landline which we do not need. My interaction with their customer service so far hasn't been that great, but might still consider them.
