Yet this site http://resources.zdnet.co.uk/speedtest/ is giving me speed test results of over 1800 kbps every time.

I don't get it. Can anyone explain what's going on? In real terms, the only thing I've noticed is webpages hanging for a couple of seconds or so before loading. My gaming pings are still as low as day one. Is it possible that adsl guide speed test page is having it's own problems today?

Try downloading a file from microsoft that's the most reliable indicator of your bandwidth.

Virgin are pretty well known for their fairly consistent dire speeds. I never get over 2mbit in the evenings and weekends and I'm on the 20mbit package. This forum is full of people in the same situation.

I've just been to speedtest.net. Interestingly, london and ireland locations are only giving me up to 414kbps, yet when I test germany, poland, latvia and all european countries, it's giving me 1,975kbps! Yet I live in london. Work that one out

Also, I'm getting between 1,400 and 1,700kbps on the various dslreports tests to the USA, so my connection must be fine. I'll check out some microsoft files.

Weird. I'm getting very good speed test results from various places, pretty much all over 1800kb, yet when I downloaded a couple of files from microsoft, one of which was windows media player 11 ( which I already have so I stopped it after a couple of minutes ) it started at 300kb/sec for about a second then eventually settled on 63kb/sec. For a 2mbit connection, my download speed should be over 200kb/sec.

But then I tested some other sites, one of which was downloading a 20MB dummy file, and I was getting a consistent 250kb/sec. LOL! I think my connection is fine, but there seems to be some discrepancies which don't make sense.
