100mbit - when? where? how?

Any details on when to expect 100mbit UK wide release? What upstream options will be? What pricing? Will 50mbit users be automaticallly upgraded to 100mbit? Thanks..

All I have heard is that it will be 10mbps upstream.

All I know is this. My street in Sheffield has been cabled for a new broadband provider and other parts of my postcode already get 100/100 so if VM are not doing the same by the time my street goes live ( March 2010) then I will jump ship.

You may mean 100Mb.

So let me get this straight.... if VM don't do 100/100 5 months ago, then you are off.
Don't tell me, all those downloads you are doing are plans for a time machine

Good to know that cable upstream speeds might finally be getting competitive, however does anyone know how many broadband users at 100Mb the shared coax segment that can link 1000+ properties is capable of supporting?

In other words, are cable customers going to suffer from increasing contention on the coax at busy times of day, with throughput dropping off due to lack of coax bandwidth rather than any problems with backhaul etc? Is the architecture up to the task as Virgin introduces higher bandwidth options?

The capacity of the cable isn't affected by the speed of the download. It's only additional download which will have any impact not the actual speed it comes down at.

Of course the higher speeds may encourage downloading more data - full bluray porn for instance....

So can a shared coax segment cope with every customer taking 100Mb simultaneously? Obviously worst case example, interested whether there is enough bandwidth available for broadband on the coax to allocate sufficient channels to every user, assuming 1000+ homes connected?

This doesn't make sense. VMs network is overcontended by design; not inherently a problem so long as you maintain a margin above current usage as not everyone uses their connection fully all the time.

Obviously if you have a large number of heavy downloaders in one area that tends to saturate the network and unless VM increases the network capacity everyone suffers.

[Edit: Re-reading what you said, it's my understanding that the trunk coaxial cables can be saturated as each drop along the distribution line does not have a discrete/exclusive signal range. I would imagine that the fibre backhaul is much more heavily contended than the coax paths and thus will cause problems much sooner.]

100mb will be done next year and no way will 50mb be auto upgraded it will be a totally new tier of service which is rightly so.
