Activation will cost £30 and installation £40.

Compatible is an oft over used phrase. It may be they are finding that when pushing 100Meg that the existing modem is not up to it.

yea you could be right there......it might also be the case that the new modem/router/hub is for customers upgrading from a lower service than 50Mb or for new customers......

and the fact that the new router/hub/modem has Gigabit ports ..then i think that even if 50Mb users do have to upgrade then thats not a bad thing anyway.....

70 quid is quite a steep upgrade cost but i think for next generation products and as long as the product performs as it is meant to do then the cost is worth Considering...well for me it is anyway .wink

Given that just buying a small gigabit switch sets you back £30, then £70 for a device to terminate and share the service is not that bad really.

If on a tight budget then it really is a case of having to accept slower speeds, for two long congestion at peak times has been ruled by forcing down pricing.

but the thing is you're not actually buying the device are you - it always belongs to them. i dont need a new router or gigabit switch anyway - i already have a netgear wndr3700 which will walk all over anthing virgin would provide i'm sure.

From their point of view it's pretty simple. They require you to pay the £70 to get their 100Mbps and as part of this charge an engineer installs a new modem/router which you can use as just a modem if you want to use your own router.

Still pretty cheap regardless of the £70 start up fee and there will be no other widely available 100M service - theirs is the only game in town

well i've pre-registered... but to honest i'm not overly fussed about it. will totally depend on how much extra it costs over my existing 50mb connection.

I'll pay whatever they ask, I want to see the UK dragged into 2010 broadband/cable wise, if we have to pay a bunch to get it installed then fine, i'll be getting this the day it's available and would happily pay more than I did for my 50mbit when I first had that put in, which was £50 per month at launch.

Someone has to wire this country up with reasonable speed broadband, I'm glad it's finally happening, 50mbit was the biggest IT change I made in years, it put this nonsense of battling with old copper lines for the extra 1mbit here and another 0.5mbit there and fiddling with routers and connections to squeeze something extra out of it, which was quite frankly an embarrassment...now its 50mbit on the nose, no messing no f-ing about, just flat out 6.1MB/sec download speeds, job done.

and still cheaper than BTW installation charge for FTTC and I will not sign up 50mb or 100mb because the internet (websites is no different between 10mb, 20mb, 50mb, 100mb, 200mb or 400mb and so on) as I don't download much. Also £45 a month standalone 100mb still too expensive to be honest.

Cable 10Mb

i think you will find that there is a 'big' difference in the way that your pc and home network will perform online depending on what download and upload speed you have..

on 50Mb there is a Noticeable difference in the speed of web pages loading compared to my previous 20Mb..they load in a flash now almost instant.even loaded websites..

web sites are becoming more complex and are getting loaded with more html and flash for example..on faster connections there is not as much lag waiting for the page to open ..

having a faster connection does not always mean that there will be more downloading being done per mnth than normal..

but what it does achieve is spread a larger bandwidth over a home network so that all Computers and devices connected have a much better connection and do not bleed each other depending on what applications are being used...

i no that my average download totals per mnth will be roughly in the same margin as they are at the moment after i upgrade to 100Mb..
( 75GB per mnth )

by upgrading all i am doing is spreading more available bandwidth over my home network wink

Well I've registered my interest, not sure what to do though when it eventually comes to Torquay.

Depending how long it takes to arrive, I may upgrade to 50Mbit in the mean time. At least that way the jump in price isn't going to be as much for me (I'm paying something like £20 a month for 20 Meg, so I gather 50Meg is about an extra £8 a month).

At the moment I can't think of what I'd need a 100Mbit connection for, but then again I thought the same about 2Mbit back in 2002 when I got ADSL.
