SuperHub Wireless

[link to this post]

Hello All,

I have an issue with the VM SuperHub.

Every week or so, my wireless connection to my SuperHub drops out. I can reconnect to the SuperHub via wireless but cannot access the internet. Everything else connected to the hub via a wired connection continues to work fine.

I have other wireless access points in the house which ultimately connect to the SuperHub via a wired connection. If I connect via wireless to one of these access points I can access the internet ok.

The only way to get internet access back via wireless on the SuperHub, is to power cycle the thing.

Has anyone come across this issue? Perhaps the SuperHub has an intermittant fault on it?

Thanks

John

There have been umpteen issues with Superhubs requiring reboots. There is a new firmware in test which may well be going live within the next couple of weeks. It may or may not fix your issue. I doubt that a replacement SH would perform any differently. If it remains a problem sufficiently annoying for you to consider spending some money on it then buying a halfway decent router and putting the SH in modem mode is the way forward.

I read so many bad reports of the Superhub, before I had one, that I decided to retain my own router and use the thing on Modem only mode - it seems that was the right decision to take as the problems are still there.

Not only have I saved myself hours of heartache, but I didn't have to change anything on laptops, mobile phones, KIndle or whatever - they all carried on working as they always had.

As far as I'm concerned, the Superhub was just a change of modem... smile

that's annoying (going back and forward removed the text i was doing)

make sure the hub is set to 150mb mode not 300mb as some devices do not like it and set channel to fixed number (1, 6 or 11) as some devices freak out when its set to auto

I have bought a cheap TP-Link AP (£25) and placed it next to the superhub (I gave up on trying to get it to work as an extender) and disabled the wireless on the superhub. I now have wireless coverage all over the house again, proving that the signal strength on the SH is pretty poor.

Wireless seems to have been fine since the Firmware update.

Probably the best way to minimise problems with the Super Hub is to use it purely like the cable modem you used to know and love, and put the Super Hub into Modem Mode.

Then you can append your own choice of wireless router and have it work exactly as you want it.

(I've only had my Super-Hub-in-Modem-Mode hang once in the month since I've had it, requiring a power-cycle.)

That's the thing.

Even in modem mode this thing still isn't perfect. I left VM after a few months largely down to the terrible equipment.

I think I'd prefer the 31 Mbps down, 1.9 Mbps up, that I'm getting on VM cable to the maybe 4 Mbps down, 0.5 Mbps up that I'd get on ADSL, since I'm 4 miles as the crow flies from the telephone exchange!

See I agree there. Luckily I had FTTC available so it was a no brainier.

Dear Jw6250,

I HAD been a customer with VM for over 8 years and unwittingly opted for their superhub, described as the ferrari of all internet broadbands @ 30mbps!! 6 weeks later its more like a milk float with a puncture. My advice, based on my own personal experience is to send them a formal letter of complaint highlighting that the device has been misrepresented to you at the point of sale, and clearly not fit for purpose as it needs another router to provide a basic level of service.

If you, like me, have regularly reported the issues, submitted a written complaint and stick to your guns VM have no options but to release you from the contract terms - as they have breached them not YOU!! The SUPERHUB is nothing but RUBBISH.

VM will try all the usual tricks, being passed from pillar to post, customer services, tech support and suggest blowing down the sockets too!! Don't fall for their excuses - speak to Customer Complaints via 01256752000.

Honestly I agree with every single word. Might be a newbie but I could not have wrote it better myself.

I went via complaints and eventually was allowed to leave early. I don't mind being forced to use a providers hardware, but when it doesn't work 100% and I'm forced to use it I hit the roof.

In 10 years with Sky I've never once had one dogey bit of equipment, never once had a single problem. The sky box never crashes, all of their routers have been fab etc.

The one time I tried VM it was a nightmare. Their TV box used to freeze everytime I tried to access on demand too & always had a flashing heart which I was told meant bad things.

Do you turn the router off lots? The problems only start to ocur after a few days of usage. So turning it off overnight would mean you prob wouldn't notice an issue.

Have you changed the router SSID. This causes it to do some wild things as well.

A new firmware upgrade was recently pushed out to try and solve some of the wifi and stability issues. Not on VM to know how sucessful that went but it may have helped a fair bit.

I haven't had any issues here either, just had to change it to channel 6 when installed and all has been good.

There's nothing special about channel 6! The aim is to choose the least-congested of channels 1, 6 and 11.

Use InSSIDer to see who's using which channels that you can pick up, and worry about those with the highest power.

I too had abysmal wireless when first installed back in May. I tried Modem Mode with my old Linksys 54GS Router for a while. I then experimented by setting the Superhub SSID and security to the same as the Linksys. This enabled a quick swapout to compare performance and found these steps useful:-

Use InSSIDer to discover which channel(s) are in use nearby. Choose a channel, i.e. avoid Auto, which bridges a gap, in my case Channel 8 on 2.4Ghz band.

I then locked the speed down to 144Mbps.

R36 firmware started rolling out on 13/07/2012 see here and I installed this within the last hour. Everything went smoothly with wireless laptop, desktop, Blu-Ray Player and TV all connecting seamlessly as does my iPhone.

Everyone in my area on Virgin are all on channel 1 also... it seems to default to that... so channel 6 is spot on smile

Virgin Media operates its own speedtest sites however, its not open to public access...surprisingly!!

I would suggest this one, I used it to dispel some of the puffery from VM customer retentions/technical support bods.

Dear The Jimster,

Perfectly understandable. I would do the same however, it it dont to whay it says on the tin, then should you or for that matter pay hard earned £££ for inferior quality and connectivity?? Yours to decide.

Pity they haven't updated the web-page so that their speedometer reads above 20 Mbps for downloads!
