Im getting sick of the mail virgin are sending through my door telling me I can have up to 300mbps! If I can then why does their checker say NO!?
OFCOM need telling!
Are you saying that you can't get ANY speed below 300Mbps? And you are unhappy about it?
When you say that VM are lying to you, is that because the mailing is addressed to you or is just a case of getting a general flyer put through the door?
If you are getting a letter addressed to you from VM then you can say they are lying to you if you can't get that speed.
On the other hand, if it's just a general flyer that is being put through the door then your grievance is with the people who have put the flyer through your door and not VM directly.

No, he's saying he's getting marketing leaflets implying he can get speeds up to 300 Mbps, but the checker does not show the 300 Mbps option.
You okay hun?
Exactly, the leaflet says he can get UP TO 300Mbps so it is only lying if he can't actually get any speed lower than 300Mbps.
VM probably just need to sort their database and it's an oversight. OP would be better off reaching out to VM via their community site or the phone than going to Ofcom.
Certainly here they only send me spam offering 200.
I think you're logic is a bit off there, if the fastest product he can buy is 200 Mbps then he can only get upto 200 Mbps products and can't get the 300 which the leaflet implies he can.
Remember VM works by package speed, its the congestion which results in lower speeds than your synced at.When viewed this way, the leaflet is wrong.
I think you may have had an accidental sense of humor bypass sometime in the past. I was being sarcastic about the way the OP phrased it.
Perhaps you need to be a bit more creative with your replies
PS. Your reply to me made me laugh
"OP would be better off reaching out to VM "
Or just calming down and putting the bumf in the bin. Speed isn't everything!

Yes the letter is addressed to me offering me a £454 discount over 18 months and quotes a package for 300mbps - not up to it actually says 300mbps as part of the amazing package. It's for 300mbps "Vivid" a V6 box and a load of channels I get free but hardly watch anyway.
Daemon, round here 3mbps is amazing if you can get it on VM's network. trust me i've tried.
No one ever could tell me why our area was downgraded. Does annoy me when there is talk of more speeds etc that's all.
I guess I do need to shut up and like broadband666 says it's not all about speed, There is decent FTTC around here so that's where my time attention and cash should be going to.
The end..
And I am fine thanks Igni

No one ever could tell me why our area was downgraded. Does annoy me when there is talk of more speeds etc that's all.
Thought someone had told you there wasn't enough capacity to deliver 300Mb so, due to the bad PR from Watchdog and the upcoming changes to advertising where VM will have to ensure the median customer is getting full speed, not just the top 10%, the product was withdrawn until additional capacity had been added.
VM have swung the other way and are now refusing to release 300/350Mb even when it wouldn't be a problem.
Frustrating, but VM wouldn't be the first and won't be the last cable company that offers different speeds in different areas. Combination of paranoia, dodgy policy, not enough cash around to get things done and slow / [censored] implementation.
Even on business services it's the same story - 200/20 is as high as they go here, while in some areas there's adequate capacity to sell 350/35 or even 500/50.
Think they're hoovering up the worst areas and resolving those rather than pushing out maximum speeds.

Can't be? they only do 300/300 according to the website ?
https://www.avbroadband.co.uk/
Unless it's an unlisted business package
"(if your use is excessive we will contact you and may reduce your speed but we will not charge you). "
Seems even £135 a month for 300/300 has a limit.

Ignore their website, they haven't updated it properly with up to date information.
From the package page of the website: "And, best of all, over the coming months we will start to increase our speeds with the target of delivering 1Gb/s connections to our customers."
The ultra fast package is now a 1Gb/s connection.

Ah fair enough thanks for the info
So VM can and do offer a better connection to their resellers than to their OWN biz and res customers?
That's shocking!

Nah. They will sell 10G happily to whomever. These guys are not reselling Virgin Media broadband, they purchased a leased line from VM and are using it to backhaul their FTTP network.
They're connecting through a leased line terminating in Northampton by the looks.
Oh that.
It's nothing more than concerns about service quality. As above with the changes to advertising, the bad publicity, etc, they want to ensure there's adequate capacity free before they start selling 350.
That means 24 channels and then checking stats. After that some time scratching balls. After that a few months of planning upgrades if needed.

I see - well thats fair enough they aren't cheap but then again neither is their backhaul. If what's said to be be believed they can only make 10 or maybe 11 times the £135 a month?
I thought a 10Gbps line would be more than that?

If they have relatively few customers it's probably a single GigE for all of them. They wouldn't be the first selling up to a gig on a gig backhaul.

Fair enough. Well I hope it works for them, and their trouble don't end them. It's nice to see someone actually doing what VM could (i assume by the backhaul already being available) but don't want to?

Well it looks like the company is about to go bye byes, so I doubt we will find out if it works for them

No more related than comparing a leased line with FTTC. Backhaul isn't a problem, sharing a fibre between a few hundred customers via coax is the rub.

Yes that's well known. But then again what trust can someone have in them based on their current performance in business service as well as residential?
SO the £149 a month for 30/30 would be a better option than £55 a month for the 350? If someone can get the latter I mean.

The business side also shows 350mbps now - £30 a month for 350/7 with no phone line on 24 month contract is tempting.

Tempting, but that upload is just plain ridiculous, I'd rather have a bit slower download and a faster upload.
I'm hoping they uprate the upload speeds prior to me being able to order early next year.
Edit. That's £30 + vat.

I notice I have 24 down and 4 up channels, so they have done major upgrades?

New routers at Newport hubsite, new transmission platform at Newport hubsite, rebuilding of some of the local network components along with pulling fibre closer to homes.

Thanks for the info.
When it dips now it's not worth caring about
Far cry from the 3mbps I used to get
Hubsite is near my house too. Might even try the TV again sometime it should have enough juice now to power it

The interactive services will benefit from there no longer being severe congestion for sure.
Standard linear TV not an issue, any property that doesn't have enough incoming RF power has a fault and should have drop cable replaced and/or be moved to a different tap in the cabinet. Worst case an amplifier fitted locally.
Pleased your experience is okay. Mine is somewhat different.

I convinced myself Xmas day would be THE test. but to be honest it's the same every day now - it's nice because I think I might try Tivo again
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/27296086.png
I am actually really happy with VM and when the next price rise happens I won't be leaving, which is something i've not been able to say for years.
I ragged my FTTC into the double TB figure when I had it - but with VM I now don't download more than a few hundred GB a month - as I know it'll come down faster - it's shifted my mentality and stunned me to be honest.
Merry Christmas to you all
