Joining VM, any newbie tips?

Hi all. I�m joining VM for broadband only in a couple of weeks. Any tips I should know about?

My plan is to put the superhub 3 into modem mode and use my existing router.

The home has an NTL cable point in the wall, but they�re sending an engineer anyway.

Try to "persuade" the ""engineer" to check all the power levels. If the cable has been in place since the days of Dick, it could have deteriorated considerably.

I'd get rid of the NTL faceplate inside the house if you can remove it easy enough. The newer face plates are much nicer as they have two euro modules that pop in and out.

Edit: If the NTL ones are the same ones used by Telewest you will find the new modules are a little smaller, thus depending on position this might reveal some old colours or markings if the box has been on too tight.

What type building do you live in? Flat or house? I am a VM Big OOMPH subscriber and use the Superhub on it's own. I live in a 1 bedroom flat in a small tenement. I have a Netgear USB 3.0 Wireless Dongle & get 867 Mb/sec on 5 GHz. I have "customised" the Superhub with my own settings to secure it as much as I can. In other words, I've setup my own SSID on both channels (2.4 & 5 GHz), configured MAC address filtering and disabled WPA. I get very good reception on the wireless all over my flat & even outside. I would, eventually, like to get another router only because I would like to share a portable hard disk that I have and access it remotely. Other than that the Superhub is pretty good for me....

Neither, the coax panel and the telephone point are side by side, both in one piece, moulded plastic. Nothing pops out.

Its a big flat with solid walls, and the cable point is in one corner, so I wouldn't expect any single device to cover, and I already have a good router, attached to my separate VDSL modem. (I've had WiFi here since 802.11b first arrived!).

It's the very latest Virgin Media face plates that have pop out modules and look much nicer .

The old moulded ugly things look like this NTL Box

Cannot find a picture of the latest ones on the internet so will take one of mine later tonight.

Mine looks more like that, but much cleaner, no visible screws, and the coax screw point is on the bottom. The NTL logo is also very feint.
