Virgin Media Mail Filter

[link to this post]

VM's Filter for incoming mail is showing shortcoming.

I have been trying to delete all my "Filters". The procedure to do so requires that I use their very cumbersome system: Settings>Email>Filter Rules which then brings up a screen with all my rules for allocating the folder I selected to transfer from Inbox.

With assistance from a kind forum helper I managed to block delete a couple of screenfuls in order to begin again. Unfortunately I was left with perhaps a hundred or more "Rules". In order to delete these I had to select each rule using their "bin" icon. Fine, but each time I try programme hangs, in that I receive msg to Wait or Exit. Nothing happens then. I eventually give up. The rules I cannot delete are not even actioned in that mail is received in inbox!

The person trying to assist recommended I use their MOD Team. Several posts later I receive:-

"Hello again, ess1! You''re shooting through the ranks faster than a packet at 152Mb. Bravo! We''d like to thank you for your continued contribution with a brand new rank. Your new rank is Superfast. Congrats! We hope you''ll stick around. It''s really nice having you here to keep us company in the community. Thanks! The Virgin Media Community Team"

Anyone else having problems with this cumbersome system? At first I thought that, as it's free, live with it. But it is not free I pay for BB.

Being perfectly honest you would be much better to move your personal email away from Virgin.

I access Virgin email ONLY from the Web - everything else comes in to my Laptop from my 'using' Email address - which is given to those who need it.

Remember also that should you get totally fed up and decide to leave Virgin your email will be shut down by them - officially after 90 days - but this time varies, and you will not be warned before they actually do close it.

I don't use it, never have, never will.

We moved over to proper hosted email service when I joined Virgin a couple of years back, prior to that I used my own domain name email address which forwarded to Plusnets dreadful system.

The big mistake an awful lot of people make is using their broadband providers email address and system, then when you decide to change provider they suddenly realise everyone has their ISP email address and either don't move or have the pain and trouble of notifying everyone.

Either use Hotmail/Outlook/Gmail or pay for a proper email service.

Thank you both for prompt replies.
Many years ago I used Outlook 2003. I have both Gmail and Hotmail but, age catches up, and I have quite forgotten how to allocate a mail address in VM. I recall when I had a problem with Outlook 2003 VM informed me that they do not support Outlook.

Assistance very much appreciated as I am quite happy with VM as my ISP.

Keep well.

Your ISP for internet access, does not need to be the same as you use for email. You can use free, advertising supported (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com) and you can connect email clients such as Outlook or Thunderbird to those mailboxes. (Outlook 2003 is a bit old and may have problems with some of the newer security features).

You can also use email provided by an internet provider, Virgin, BT, etc. But I would always suggest not to do this, as this traps you with that internet provider and makes it harder to move should you find a better deal. Or move house.

You can also buy email services from various companies, costing from £4/month to more, and attach your own domain (e.g. [email protected]) and you can use that with any internet service.

Remember mobile phones give internet access as an ISP, but don’t provide email, think of your broadband ISP in the same way.

Thanks for info.
If I use say Win10 Mail will VM transfer mail to, say me@hotmail? At this time, with my lockdown/health probs., I am loathe to change addresses - family all live away from UK.

Yes you can set up an auto forward, this means any email sent to that specific Virgin email address will be forwarded to your hotmail address

See this thread, although it talks about how to stop auto forward emails you will be able to see how to set up a auto forward, there's also an option to stop processing subsequent rules.

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Re-How-to...

This link takes you to a screenshot showing the options and where the setting is - taken from the above thread.

Once this is done you can gradually stop using your Virgin address and give people your Hotmail address, without fear of missing emails still sent to the Virgin address.

Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to respond, with excellent advice, so promptly.

Will do as suggested - unless "her downstairs" summons lol

"I am quite happy with VM as my IS"

Until the time it is too slow or the price increases dramatically.

Was Eclipse Home Option 1, VM 2Mb & O2 Standard
Now Utility Warehouse (up to 16mbps) via Talk Talk

A rather unhelpful and totally pointless post, especially given the OP has hinted they are finding things hard at this difficult time.

VM is not the only ISP to have issues, most do one way or another, obviously some are much worse than others though, but this is simply not the thread for it! You also seem a fine one to comment on this considering you're using Utility Warehouse and TT wink
