Have used the speed checker on here for a long time but getting a disparity between the scores here and the Ofcom speed test.
On M600 and hit 600 on the Ofcom site but top out at around 200 here?

Is that a bit of manipulation to allow full bandwidth to certain sites (like Ofcom)?

On M500 here and get full 500mb shown on both speed tests.

No. Speedtests are not a 100% reliable guide especially at higher speeds.

If full speed is reached via Ofcom's checker all is probably fine.

I have 1gb virgin and the most I get with wifi is around 568mb download. I changed my lap top as it was 2012 and now 2021 latest mac book pro.

Normal for WiFi using the virgin Hub 4 which only has AC (WiFi 5) wireless. You would need to buy a WiFi 6 (AX) access point or router which would then be able to use the WiFi 6 in your Mac.

Much cheaper to get an Ethernet adaptor for your MacBook and connect by an ethernet cable (cat 6) to the Hub 4, when you need faster speeds.

A bit of an update: Vastly different results on Firefox and Edge

Firefox Down 186 bursting to 204 Up 42 bursting to 42.6.

Edge Down 528 bursting to 599 Up 42.1 bursting to 42.5.

Same wired PC using Virgin Router in Modem mode routed through Draytek router

I have noticed the same phenomenon with the Firefox, Edge Chromium and Chrome browsers. From time to time, the Think broadband speed tester reports significantly lower download speeds with Firefox..

Firefox is really the only browser left with its own engine, the rest are using the Chromium open source project as the engine.

Tim Berners-Lee said this was "a problem" and urged people to support Firefox.
