Virgin Media WiFi hotspots

[link to this post]

I am trying to help my work get an issue sorted, and looking for some input as we are getting no where fast.

I work at a Hotel that has WiFi provided by VM. Its not free.

But if you are a VM customer you can get on it for free as part of your package.

You have to download this VM Connect app though.

The issue is that the app shows a map and where the hotspots are and wont let you connect to it unless you are "In range" on the map.

But for the hotel, the hotspot marker on the map is not at the hotels location, its about 300m up the road!

We tried to get in touch with VM about it and got fobbed off... THREE times with "Sorry there is an issue with the service and compatibility with Android 11 devices"

Now, I could be wrong here but I doubt it but how can some sort of compatibility issue cause the marker of the hotspot location on the map to be in the wrong place? The map marker for your devices location is spot on.

Am I missing something here? Our next stop is to get the IT Department to try and sort it with them but I know they are really busy atm with Opera upgrades so we was trying to sort it ourselves with no luck thus far.

I use the V.M. hotspot, you do not require the app. As long as you can see any VM SSID you should be able to connect.

You will require your VM account log in details.

It can be a bit of a convoluted process, depending on the various fields that are shown.

EAP METHOD: TTLS

PHASE2 AUTHENTICATION: MSCHAPV2

vmedwifi/your email

password: your account password

ONLY ONE CONNECTION PER ACCOUNT CAN LOG IN.

I can connect to the WiFi but the login page won't take my VM info and wants me to pay £3 to get online with it.

It looks as if V.M. have locked down whatever is providing the hotel Wi Fi, def. not a "Hotspot"

You will have to find another "Virgin Media" true Hotspot.

The Hotspot is created from a VM router Wi Fi signal, unless the user has opted out.

Look for the normal VM SSID. If you can see a few, then you will see "Virgin Media. That is
the Hotspot.

It IS a VM hotspot.

Confirmed.

The map via the Connect app shows the hotspot and its address but the marker on the map is in the WRONG location and thus, wont even try to connect as the app thinks I am not in range.

This is not a residential hotspot. This is a Hotel with WiFi provided by VM. But it still free to use for VM customers.

Hi,

Are you aware that your phone could / should have a built-in hotspot? Depending on the OS of your phone you would to configure it but it would save you messing around with the VM hotspot....Just my 2 cents worth here....
