Virgin Media - new style cabinet?

[link to this post]

VM seem to be gearing up to cable my area up with FTTP cable. According to local planning permissions - cabinets to be deployed to majority of streets seem to be VM FB-2 cabs.

Screenshot of diagram

The above link shows proposed cabs to be installed on pavements/streetworks. Is there any real life images to what these cabs look like? Google images doesn't seem to spit anything out when referencing the FB-2 cabinet name.

Thanks in advance.

Little cabinets like the one that caused this local controversy have been popping up near where I live, including on our street.

I was wondering what they were for. Are they the ones from the diagram you linked to? Are they for the FTTP rollout?

We also have them installed in the area, and yes a VM engineer I spoke to confirmed they are for the Fibre replacement of the old co-ax cabling.

The insane part of that, is the box appears to be totally blocking access to an Openreach CSP !

So at some point VM are going to lay fibre to my property to replace the coax? Do they need to dig up my driveway to do that or can they somehow push the new fibre through the existing underground tunnel?

Once done will there be new speed packages available? Or do they offer existing packages just over FTTP rather than coax hybrid?

Weren't there some trial areas already live on VM FTTP? Did they get faster speeds than the currently available packages?

Virgin have rolled out FTTP to a few million properties already. Currently they simulate the DOCSIS signal over the fibre (RFOG - Radio frequency over glass).

They recently announced a plan to upgrade the entire HFC (coax) estate to FTTP by 2028 though they will be using XGS-PON instead of RFOG.

Eventually they will be able to offer faster services over XGS-PON but whether they wait till all or most of the country had been upgraded is anyone's guess.

Currently they aren't selling higher tiers to those upgraded already.

I would assums so if there is a conduit in place. However for cable installs like mine, they just buried the cable in the ground, so no chance of a repull. Another VM install near me is just left lying above ground at the fence line. I guess it all depends on which Contractor installs the cable on the day !
