virgin media tv only

Looking to get Virgin Media TV as i have Zen Internet for broadband however when looking online, i can only see broadband + TV bundles and just not TV.

Is there any reason why you need there Broadband also? As when i was with them about 2015, it was just separate coxal feed from Broadband.

Virgin Media TV is a coax feed into a TV box. They seem to only sell this now if you buy broadband from them. At the moment the broadband modem is also on coax. (Even in areas with fibre in the street, it is coax indoors).

I don't think Virgin Media is competitive on TV, if you have good broadband already look at Sky Stream as an alternative?

I think a lot of the functionality of the TV service relies on having broadband access as well. As said, if you just want TV then look at Sky Stream, Now TV etc.

The Virgin box needs to see Virgins DNS servers for most functions to work on their V6 box. It needs it for recording, catch-up and to use any of the apps. If you don't have it setup to do this then these functions stop working within a week.
It also won't update or activate if you do a factory reset without the Virgin DNS being visible to the box.

Since I posted last night I spoke to friends whom had Virgin TV until last autumn. They said the TV box used to be a recorder (similar to Freesat+, or Sky+) and now it ignores you when your choose to record, instead it points you at streaming (e.g. All4, iPlayer etc). They scrapped Virgin TV & Broadband and have moved to a local alternative FTTP network provider.

I would guess Virgin isn't that interested in TV anymore.

If a customer has Virgin Broadband (and I appreciate you don't) then you can get Virgin TV 360 which allows up to 6 programmes to be recorded at once on its 1TB hard disk.

If a customer does not have Virgin Broadband then their Stream box is available. As you say in your last post, this sends you to streaming apps (iPlayer ITV/X etc) for TV which isn't live. You can't record on the Stream box.

A few years ago you could get a Tivo from Virgin with a hard disk on which you could record and not need to have Virgin Broadband, largely as the the Tivo box had its own modem so could connect to the internet through its connection. That option is no longer available.

Hope that makes sense and I've got things mostly right!

Those are the new products.. My friends had two boxes, originally back in 2001 the original NTL TV boxes, but by 2021, one was the original (very large) Tivo box, and the other was the TV6 box. The last software update to the TV6 was the final straw and the planner actually didn’t record locally, just saved a bookmark to the on-demand, which sometimes was withdrawn by the broadcaster.

The newer TV360 and the internet Stream (similar to Sky’s Stream) is quite different, and if that is all they sell now that explains why you need VM Broadband.

I think its time to avoid Virgin TV.
