Wireless Router recommendation

[link to this post]

So I'm getting Virgin Media 20Mb cable broadband installed next week, but I'm looking for a wireless router that'll work with that to set up a home network with various devices in my house.

Only requirements is that it definitely works with Virgin cable BB and works with games consoles and laptops.

Anyone got any recommended models/makes?

My only comment to that is -- check which wireless system you will be using - my MacBook is enabled for wireless 'n' and my husbands PC Laptop is wireless 'g'

If you are using Virgin Media you will have to first connect through their cable modem

im a technician in the South Wales area and the ones i use are Netgear.

I used to use Linksys but started having problems with random modem reboots, i took a look online and i was suprised to find that its a known issue with quite a number of the Linksys routers where a dodgy Firmware causes the problems but what worried me the most was Linksys created the problem in a firmware update but didnt know how to fix it.

PC SPEC
AMD Athlon 64 4200+ AM2 Dual Core, ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe 570 NForce Mainboard, 2GB DDR 2 667Mhz OCZ Ram, 1050 GB Hard Disk Space, 512mb NVidia 8500GT PCI-E 16x Graphics, 700watt PSU.

Virgin Media 10mb which is now 20mb :-)

Virgin Media R EVIL!!!

You probably won't get the full 20mbit with that on your wireless though. Most G wireless routers max out at about 14 or 15mbit. To make sure you get the full 20mbit you'll ned too look at N or MIMO routers I reckon. Of course you'll need to make sure you have a N or MIMO compatible wireless card.

Yeah I'm not really bothered if I get the max speed on the wireless, just as long as it is a half decent speed that's ok.

I know Netgear were recommended earlier, but I've read about cable Netgear routers having problems with some games consoles (specifically the DS) and so I'm currently looking at this Linksys one as recommended by pcoventry76 earlier:

So will that work ok?

Can i ask though, does it make a difference which wirless router you choose if you have 4 people in the house using the connection?

We are on 2 different floors with a good old brick walls between the rooms.

I was a bit dumb thinking that my RangeMax ADSL router would work... i should have twigged Must have been a slow day.

Thanks

Netgear WPN824 works well here. Just connected everything up, switched on and engineer phoned to activate modem and I was up and running. I just had to set up wireless security and a few other settings.

I have used Netgear equipment for some time and always been happy with it.

Laptop works at end of garden, with router in front box/bedroom about 30-40 metres away. getting good connectivity.
