Shameful pings

[link to this post]

Is anyone else getting horrendus packet loss, and pings that yoyo from 10ms-150ms? I can't do any oline gaming at all like this, and it's especially bad on weekends. What can I possibly do? (ADSL is not an option unless I wanted a 512kbp connection!)

pinged www.jolt.co.uk /w TTL 55.

6% packet loss at peak times (between 1pm and 11pm?) .. pings vary every few seconds between 13ms and 300ms... (and ofcourse request timed out.. )

i'm on XL ... 20MBit ... and getting 0.5Mb speeds from their own servers.. (at 0030 GMT)

online gaming is pretty much useless with this latency / packet loss .. lag spikes.. 4-5 seconds frozen in games.. every minute ...

been monitoring the ping/packetloss for a few days.. this weekend its been absolutly awful

I spoke to someone who said that Virgin technical support were fielding lots of calls complaining about performance, and so far they fob the customer off with some things for them to try, but its actually a well known issue with massively overloaded infrastructure and nothing they suggest is going to help. They just want to get you off the phone.

What I think is particularly dire is that there is simply no incentive for them to improve. Back in the Telewest / NTL days, there was competition and pings that were the envy of many. Now it's just a VM monopoly, no other cable provider to switch on to.

Had 6-14 ms pings once upon a time.

If by some miracle, I spoke to senior management, all I would probably hear back is meaningless ramble about hiw 99% of our users have are satified with the level of service yah yah blah blah etc....

It's pointless all of this, isn't it?,There's nothing we can do.

It not a national problem by far.

I'm in Bristol and I've yet to see poor pings or slow throughput since I signed up, just I have friends in Dorset that struggle to hit 7-8Mb on 20Mb connection.
