SMTP problem

[link to this post]

I've recently moved to VM and have noticed a problem with their mail servers. I've sent some emails via their SMTP server and it has overwritten the from address with my virgin media mail address.

Anybody know a way round this? I don't want Virgin interfering with my email.

it doesn't do that for me - did you use their CD to setup the account, if so has it overwritten your email settings (it doesn't use an account and password to connect to the server?)

smtp.virginmedia.com requires authentication and overwrites whatever From address I use. I just tried smtp.ntlworld.com and it works fine with non-virgin email addresses. It looks like this is part of the new improved service that all customers will be getting migrated onto.

I had a similar issue where I was only able to use my Virgin Media email address for my outgoing mails.
I believe I have just found a way around this...here it is (for Thunderbird, you might have to tweak things a bit for Outlook):

1) First you will need a Gmail/Googlemaill email address. This is easy to set-up and does not tie you to using the address you have created.

2) From your Googlemail account, got to Settings and then Accounts (second tab), add the email address you want use to the list (it doesn't have to be set as default)

3) Now go to your email client (thunderbird) and set-up a new smtp server that you can later allocate to your email accout (Tools-Accounts Settings-Outgoing Server)

4) Server name is smtp.gmail.com, Port 465 (or 587 or 995), use the Security and Authentication option, and input the Googlemail email address you have created. Do not click on "use secure authentication".

5) Make sure you allocate this new smtp server to the account you want to use.
Up to you if you use the "Leave messages on the server" option.

The outgoing mails sent through this account should now show the correct email address (i.e. the one you have input under bullet point 2 above).

Hope this works!

For Outlook Express, all you have to do is make the GoogleMail server (smtp.gmail.com, Port 465) the Outgoing Server for your Virgin Account, with the "My Server Requires Authentication" option.
