Moving house - should I get VM cable?

[link to this post]

Hi all. I have a bit of a dilemma. I am currently with o2, and be* before that, i really like o2 - it is stable with good speeds and I don't want to switch - but we are moving house next month and the new house is apparently 2.5km straight-line distance to the exchange, so I reckon the best we're going to get is probably 3-4mb maybe but its impossible to estimate - either way it will be a step-down from what we currently sync at. The new house has cable connected and that is what the present owner uses, and I've checked on the VM site and it is in a 50MB area (not sure we would go with the 50MB product). If we switched I would probably have to pay out the remainder of my o2 contract, which isnt that much anyway. We also have Sky which we would probably get through Virgin if we switched (don't need the HD channels). We dont d/l a lot, I only occasionally play games, I use it to vpn into work so i need it to be reliable, no p2p, I do d/l a bit from binary newsgroups over ssl but again lately it hasnt been that much - but then I like the flexibility of no d/l limits or throttling which i have with o2, and I really dont like traffic shaping and I've heard VM is bad for this. So my question is - is VM for me? Sorry for the long post.

oh, is it true that speed over cable is not affected by distance from the exchange like adsl? thanks.

So youve d/l'd 200GB since midnight last night - thats impressive. Is that usual for you, and do VM get on your back about it or do you ever find your connection throttled?

I called o2 and it will cost me almost £90 to pay out the contract, which isnt a problem but its more than i thought it would be. For that sort of money its worth me paying a bit more and getting a bt line connected at the new property, meaning a new 12 month contract with bt on their cheapest package which is £33/quarter or something. Then if I wanted to I could keep o2 as a backup until the o2 contract runs out and use VM as the primary.

I switched from NewNet + BT + Freeview to VM for phone, bb and tv when we moved house.

I don't regret the switch for a minute.
