New to VM - differing opinion

[link to this post]

I moved house into a flat and due to BT wanting £125 to activate the phone I told them to stuff it, luckily the place had vm already installed, I came from be broadband 24mb (actually synced at 14mb).

Anyway I got the 10mb option, my thoughts so far are up and down, when doing a speed test i'll get the full 10mb but some days I have had 3-5mb, I have also noticed erratic download speeds, if I go to download a linux distro from a uk server it will start off at around 1.mb for a couple of seconds then gradually fall and fall then go back to 1mb then up and down like a yoyo, I never got this with bethere, I always got a constant speed.

I understand this is part of having cable but didn't expect it to be that bad, im due to move out of the property at the end of april and will proberly be going back to bethere once my contract is over even if I have to pay more.

I have the virgin media 20 meg product.

I had sky broadband 20 meg before and synced at 16 meg.

I've never noticed my throughput drop below 19.8 meg, but I have noticed large fluctuations like your having on the wireless.

So my question is are you using wireless? If so have you tried another channel?

The location can make a big difference, i.e. what other VM users in the area are doing.

What speedtest are you using, alot of the time these can be the limiting factor. Try downloading a large file such as windows vista service pack 2 from microsofts site. See if this is also as slow.
