Poor speeds after dark

[link to this post]

Hiya, do these levels look as bad as i think they are for a 10Mbps connection?

Downstream Receive Power Level : 6.4 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 23.2 dB
Upstream transmit Power Level : 46.5 dBmV

Downstream i get maybe 1Mbps after a modem reboot, i then have about 2 hours of use before the speed slows to a complete stop.

D/S power level is a shade on the high side, but the symptoms sound more like a congested UBR.

Thanks Pete, is a congested UBR something I will have to live with or should I be calling up Customer Services?

Can try calling them, but its down to what others in the area are doing.

If within Virgin Media tolerance they'll just ignore it, or an upgrade might already be planned.

mine for comparison and this is on 20mbit if it makes any difference

downstream
Power Level
13.2 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio
43.2 dB

upstream
Power Level
39.0 dBmV

So you don't see a problem with a 23.2dB downstream SNR Pete?

As a hint it's bad, really bad, and needs a tech visit to tend to it.

Per my previous response to Pete you have a noise problem causing poor SNR downstream. It is likely worse in the evening as there is more ambient RF noise.

Firstly do check and make sure you have no splitters in your home which are open. Call Virgin and arrange a technician. It may be that your modem is hosed or it could be something a bit more of a pain to resolve, either way they should be able to sort it.

Your downstream power is too high and could use a 12dB attenuator.

thanks for confirming, I found a very old ntl web page which said the same but was for different modems so I wanted it confirming.

Thank you, checked the cable run from the front of house and I am straight onto the coax with no splitters, I only have broadband. Spoken to 4 people in the offshore call centre and finally have an engineer arranged to visit tomorrow. I will update once they have been.
