Im new to VM cable, up till now just been using adsl. However, the concept of the local network behind the wireless router shoud remain the same right?
Previously I used to have several machines connected behind a wirelss router, allocating DHCP addresses. I could always ping using the machine name, eg. desktop1, laptop1 etc. It would recognise the machine hostname, whether I was using windows networking eg. \\laptop1\c$ to browse a remote directory, or using remote desktop to laptop1, or http:\\latop1:8080 to access a webserver.
However, with cable VM, i still have the same setup via the wireless router, but most of the time "laptop1" is trying to resolve as "laptop1.cable.virginmedia.net". Actually its even returning the ping. But then its also returning the ping from something totally absurd like : ping dsfjsfsfsfsf . And its always returning the same IP address: 81.200.64.50
What is going on, and where is the .cable.virginmedia.com getting attached to all short names? I just want to return to my cosy little subnet and my local hostnames.
