News Groups Slow Speeds

[link to this post]

Is anyone else experiancing slow speeds on news groups? Im using astraweb and have noticed over the last week that speeds are really down. I'm on 50mb but only getting about 3.0MB/s.

I downloaded some files from the blueyounder games FTP and they are maxing out, but the usenet speeds are pretty poor.

It's VM's way of telling you to stop stealing stuff and pay for it.

On a semi-serious note try the other Astranews server, so if using Europe try USA and vice-versa. It's a cheap and occasionally [censored] service.

I am on an LLU product just now and tho its not fast i have never had any issues with my connection to astraweb, however, i am thinking of moving over to VM (cable) and wondered is this the norm, are speeds pretty sketchy on NNTP i doubt i would be moving to the 50meg line, but does it make a difference? ie is one line better than the other for NNTP, like 10 better than 20 or 50 better than both etc?

these linux iso's wont download themselves you know..............

If you have problems downloading linux isos then you could always try the http or torrent sources.....

It is dangerous to make any judgements of a service based on a single post in a forum and although I spend a fair time on different forums which often include comments on VM this is the first one I've seen where somebody is complaining about newsgroup speeds.

I can absolutely guarantee that 20Mbps and 10Mbps won't be throttled to 3MB/s which the OP is moaning about.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

By almost all accounts NNTP speeds are fine. Virgin do not shape traffic on their cable network, so as long as the capacity is available to the remote server you should be able to hit 6MB/s of Linux ISO goodness.

These is going to be an firmware upgrade to the modems on the 50mb network between 15-22 July and it apparently resolves some of these issues...

For more info go to the VM support forums

No connection dropout, no slowdowns and no disconnections since the modem firmware update.

And I only got 3 T3 errors since the upgrade...
