VM installation - unusual requests?

[link to this post]

I'm about to get Virgin Media (cable) installed after nearly 10 years on ADSL. I've got some questions about what to expect in terms of the equipment that Virgin will supply me with. I will be on the 10Mbps package.

1) I use several (wired) devices, and a few wireless devices, on my home LAN. Until now I have used an ADSL wireles modem/router with a separate ethernet switch to split the ethernet into sufficient cables. Do I need to ask Virgin ahead of time to provide me with any extra hardware in addition to what they provide by default? And if so, what exactly do I need to ask for and will they charge for it?

2) I will be getting Virgin TV at the same time. But the room with the TV will not be the same as the room requiring the ethernet connection. Will this be a problem? And again, do I need to make any special requests before the installer comes over?

I can't imagine that the above are especially unusual requests, but I'd appreciate any advice at all to make sure that I'm actually up and running after the engineer comes over.

Thanks in advance!

They should provide a modem and a router, if you want extra devices past the 4 ports on the router then just connect your switch via ethernet to the router and you're good to go.

All of their routers are wireless as well, so you shouldn't have a problem there.

Thanks for the reply. I'll call and make sure that the installer brings both modem and router.

On the second question - computers in one room and TV in another - is that going to cause problems? If there's a separate Virgin TV box then I guess I'm fine. But if everything comes into the house through one box, then I might be stuck...

hi if u need the modem in a different room the the tv that is not a problem they will simply run a cable from the box outside the house to a diff room we have a TV in the living room a TV in a bedroom and the modem in our office each has its own terminal from the box out side the house to the diff rooms so the tv will have its own point and so will you modem hope this helps you

The comments about separate routers are out of date.

VM have been supplying a combined modem/wireless router (which they call a hub) for a while now on 10Mbps and 20Mbps installs. It will be a direct replacement for your current ADSL modem/router.

Thanks Kiwibreaks - not sure why I didn't see your comment before.

As long as the TV box is completely separate from the hub, I think I'll be OK. But if they have a single box to do both TV and internet then I'm in trouble...

I don't have the TV but I think all they do is put a splitter in the cable and run one side to your TV box and the other to the modem/hub. The internet is encoded on channels just like the TV (different encoding and channels obviously).
