Ah right.
Doesn't do any harm to warm the current provider though. Well it wouldn't if they had any sense.

I suppose not but when I moved BT => VM I left the porting to VM and only told BT I was cancelling.
If you do decide to make this move I strongly advise you don't cancel the VM service until the TalkTalk one is up and running if you place any value of having access to the web. TalkTalk have an absolutely abysmal reputation and have been known to get the phone up and running with no ADSL for weeks on end.
If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks for the warning.
Lost my phone for a couple of weeks when porting back to VM from BT, so know what to expect.
I'm still waiting to hear back from TT re porting, so .........

Yes I did read it.
My porting experience is with VM and so I stated the fact that porting with them is not automatic.
Maybe I wrongly assumed that moving to any other phone provider would be the same.
Was Eclipse Home Option 1 & VM 2Mb
Now O2 standard

Is anything? Other than hassle/poor admin. that is.

Yes; as usual the theory and the practice just don't "tie up".
I'm sure you aren't alone, which is one reason folk just don't switch.

Took us 21 days to get our numbers ported succesfully. When the VM installers came my number rang the BT line. When they left about half an hour later it rang the VM line. I guess you were unlucky. Or I was lucky which isn't usually the case.

My folks gave up trying to port their number back to BT from VM when they moved into a non cabled bit of town a few years back. VM couldn't organise a drinking contest in a brewery, info lost, no record of contact for move etc etc etc. They eventually gave up and got a new number of BT.

It's up to the aquiring provider to sort out the porting...
