Wireless Router performance

Ive recently upgraded from 10 meg to 50.. The speed and performance when using ethernet is exceptional. However, when i turn on the wireless the performance is very shoddy with poor speeds and range.

Ive tried to change the channels but this doesnt seem to help...

I don't think its because of the proximity of the TV interfering with the signal, i believe its because the router is cheap. The reason i say this, well, the D-Link router supplied with the 10 meg service was excellent. No lag in speed or range, i could actually still pick up the signal don the end of my garden.

I suppose my question is, can i turn off the wireless on the new router, and then plug in the old D-Linlk wireless router to the new one and use that to broadcast the signal?

Just seems strange that a brand new router has poorer performance compared to a 24 month old model? Your thoughts.

You can use your old router with the superhub. Simplest option is to just connect a patch lead from one of the superhub ports to the router WAN port. If done that way anything connected to the Superhub will not be able to communicate with kit on the old router and vice versa. There are ways around that if it is a problem.

Are you aware that you'll need N adaptors to get 50Mbps as G tops out at~ 22-24Mbps.

Trying the old router is a hypothetical question cos it died today when i was about to test the theory. Although, i dont mind splashing little money on a wireless switch to get better performance.

When you say 'Patch lead' you do mean basic RJ45 cable right? And also, the super hub is set at 2.4ghz not 5ghz(N)... i just did a speed test and it gave me 35Mbps...

should i set it to 5ghz for better performance? or would it affect the range.

I'd prefer a stable slower connection than a fast unstable one.

Yes a straight RJ45 although lots of modern kit is capable of working with either if wired incorrectly.

5GHz suffers less interference than 2.4GHz as it isn't so widely used but not all N kit supports it. If you got 35Mbps it sounds like you have an N connection. Some speedtesters don't work at 50Mbps. The London or Birmingham speedtest.net ones do so I'd suggest you test there. If you only use wireless and can't get the full 50Mbps from it there's not a lot of point in paying VM the premium over 30Mbps imo as the allowances before STM are quite generous on 30.

I can't give personal wifi experiences as I only use it for phones and an iPad with everything else being wired.

Thanks - i think i'll try double up on the routers. I jumped from 10meg to 50meg for an extra tenner a month, so i thought that was a good deal.

I agree, if im only getting sub 35meg on the wireless, there is no point in paying extra...

I'll have a little play around before i call VM and ask for a downgrade. Think i got a 30 day cool off period any how.

I upgraded recently and totally agree about the superhub's wireless. I tried 5GHz on my new laptop but the other ones couldn't connect so I went back to 2.4. Try different channels and set the hub to automatically detect which security level is appropriate. But really VM should give the option of a top of the range hub/router even if they charged for it. Many people totally rely upon wireless and to have a 50Mbps connection which only gets to 20 just one floor up is not acceptable IMHO. Or VM should offer to cable the hub to a point where it connects well throughout the building - many such as mine are in a hallway or living room when the wireless connection is needed upstairs.
I have a mate in the industry who can get his hands on 10-20 metre ethernet cables and I'm about to take up a few floorboards and carpets to see if I can have a wire upstairs.

Too true Geoff - I may down grade to the 30 meg service as ive only had 5 days on the 50 meg and the wireless performance is only giving me 25-30meg at the mo.

I do agree they should offer a top of the range router (with antenna) which i would actually have paid a little extra for...

with that said, when its wire to the router, its pretty much full bandwidth... but unfortunatley i cannot have a permanent wired connection to my computer.

Tell a lie - just did a speedtest over 2.4ghz from speedtes.net and got 48.4mbps!!! Go figure!?!?!?!
