Ping Spikes

[link to this post]

I am new to Virgin. So far happy overall - except for the high latency/jitter. Regular spikes of 400-500 and even higher. I play online games and so this is a significant issue.

Can any thing be done about this and is it worth reporting?

My Broadband Ping

Thanks!

Thanks! I will see if I get any joy on the Virgin forums - but somehow I doubt that the latency issue can be easily resolved, as I have noticed that there are a great many complaining about the same over the years, without any clear resolution. That is why for the time being, I am maintaining my Be/02 connection, as the latency is much better on that - expensive though to be running both frown

These are some ping results for BBC and Google: as you can see no packet loss, and average latency is good. It is those max. spikes which concern me though -

Ping statistics for 212.58.253.67:
Packets: Sent = 6861, Received = 6861, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 458ms, Average = 20ms

Ping statistics for 62.253.3.123:
Packets: Sent = 6909, Received = 6909, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 7ms, Maximum = 412ms, Average = 11ms

Got same response on Virgin Forum - ie. that it is to do with the Superhub 2 firmware, which is due to be updated.

Are there any decent alternatives to the Superhub 2 that might provide the solution to the latency spikes?

P.S.
The max latency is still really high today:

The technology behind cable broadband even if you ignore the influence of the superhub 2 which if the problem is just that also messing with standard outgoing pings should not be being supplied to gamers, actually has higher jitter than the xDSL based services.

That is not just hearsay, even the Ofcom testing says so.

In short for latency sensitive people you are probably best retaining a more fixed latency connection of some sort.

Thanks - will therefore keep my Be connection for now, and try and soak up the extra cost smile
