Re: Install my own VM cable outside to cabinet

The max length for the top tap in the cab is ~100-120m on an RG6 pull. If they do an RG11 pull I'm not sure of the max length but 160m is fine as long as they use one of the top taps.

If you live in an ex-nynex/ex-cable and wireless it's likely they won't have much RG11 because they installed loads of smaller cabs within 100-200m of each other.

When I talk about the top tap. Inside the cabs they have rows of taps and houses closest start at the bottom because the amp value is lowest and as you get higher up the amp value increases for properties further away.

You can also ask if they would consider doing a RFoG installation but that greatly depends where the nearest fibre node cabinet is. They are the big cabinets about 5.5ftx5.5ft.

If you dig the trench will Virgin not do the rest?

That's what we did with a friend who lived down a private driveway.

Isn't there something in the Terms and Conditions about not sharing your connection? If the neighbour would agree to an Ethernet cable then they would agree to wireless, I expect.

Usually yes.... Email corporate and find out who the construction manager is for your area.

Don't forget you need permission off your council before digging on the pavement to expose the existing ducting you will need to branch into or install a foot way.

Did FTTC come to your area? Have you looked at the "Cable My Street" service from VM - apparently you can pay to have it, but the cost could be a lot depending on what needs doing...

Spot on mate... A lot of the ex telewest networks have a lot of RG11 pulls. I had only ever used RG11 once in years on ex nynex/ex c&w. Once I started on ex-telewest I was using it everyday.
