The issue isn't that router in Northampton, it's with Virgin's connectivity to one of the LANs on the London Internet Exchange.

Some destinations are fine, others are broken, depending if you go across the bad LAN or not.

Some VM customers are fine, others aren't, depending if your IP is advertised on the bad LAN or not.

How's all going with the Virgin network there then... I only have one connection on Virgin now which is on king9 but thats in Primrose Hill and most the area has been demolished, which you would think good for Virgin but unfortunately it has only left the network picking up lots of unwanted noise... not to mention the travellers nicking everything metal...

Including virgin cables and even a cabinet in one instance.. as well as drain and manhole covers and two lamp posts have also been cut in half

Actually, it's been 'okay'. I don't want to say good as they (apparently) have works ongoing in the area, but every week or so, the connection cuts out in the middle of the night for a few seconds and when it comes back on there is improvement, especially to latency (about a week ago) and dropped packets (about 3 weeks ago).

Wow, those obnoxious metal thieves... Makes you wonder as to the security of the fillings in your teeth sometimes!

What's the noise doing with the connection, increased jitter?

Yes I noticed some improvements on the BQM's from this end myself, and yes increased jitter and ping can vary too...

It's getting better though as the national grid is having to cut power supplies as the last time travellers setup camp they connected themselves up to electric, gas and water from some of the empty houses...

I have a pic somewhere in my whatsapp history that a friend sent to me of loads of cables and hose pipes running from the fronts of house towards caravans... lmao

so yes I think Virgin had to remove some parts of the network and do some new joins underground to keep the few cabinets with customers live and with the lack of power comes lack of interference emitting devices.

Virgin has always been pretty good with the network from Kings Norton... specially after the plague of issues back in 2007-2009 which ended with 100's of customers started to fight back ...

I still remember the engineers face when the cabinet went missing and all the ground where it once stood had been filled and smoothed over with concrete.

I'm based in East Belfast.... it only affected certain sites/traffic - TBB was one of them. Other speedtests around UK were fine..

If you check my BQM - happpened again last night....

I'm seeing this as well on a business cable service.
Interestingly I'm seeing the same effect on a Virgin Business leased line at the same time, but the latency graph ends up flat at 100ms. To me this is a comfort as it indicates that they are prioritising the higher SLA business leased line traffic when that particular peering link gets congested.

I should note that other monitoring at my end indicates that this doesn't seem to be a general congestion problem, just one on a particular (route to a) peering link
