Awful Latency

Here's my BQM Ping Quality graph. This looks rotten, and is consistent with the quality of service I get. My speeds are good and I can stream stuff OK, but things that require low latency are woeful - VOIP service, gaming etc. I constantly get disconnected from the Playstation Network mid-game, etc.

How can I get VM to sort this out?

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I've only just got round to investigating, but the issue has been going on for several months.

- Nothing has changed, that I can think of.
- I rebooted the Virgin Media Superhub prior to setting up the monitor.
- I'm in South London - Streatham/Croydon area.

It's a Superhub v1, and is probably about 3 years old now.

What speed are you paying for?

Do you know how to run tracerts? If so can you run some to bbc.co.uk and microsoft.com. Trying to figure out if your issue is congestion on your connection or hardware related failing.

Looking at your graph it's a tough one to call, it could be a failing superhub but also congestion in the Croydon area, however I've not seen many complaints on the VM forums for customers in that area.

Graph seems too consistent to be congestion, perhaps best to call VM and get them to investigate.

maybe a noise issue in the street cab... when virgin did a cleanup of the cabinet local to me it reduced the level of jitter on connections.

Very regular noise if it is with a roughly 5 hour gap between the worst elements.

That's horrendous.

Can eliminate congestion - it'd be worse at peak times.
Can eliminate noise as at least the primary cause - it'd have a bunch of packet loss rather than the spiky latency as packets are lost due to the noise. Noise also causes excruciatingly slow downloads.

Do you have anything else that might be consuming a lot of upstream bandwidth on the connection? Something running P2P software perhaps?

Any chance of the upstream power levels? Any T3 timeouts?

I'm leaning towards the Superhub going faulty or high utilisation of the connection. Reboot it, see if that helps. There is a bug in the Superhub 1 that causes weird latency issues but those usually escalate and then stay awful rather than coming and going.

Try switching off wireless temporarily and run with nothing connected for a few minutes, see what that does.

As I mentioned, I rebooted the Superhub before I started the monitor. I then had to enable ICMP response on the Superhub. I din't reboot it after that.

So, after your comments, I went and rebooted it - just for the sake of it.

So, what do I do? Ask for a new Superhub?
