Is there a way to check for congestion in an area before signing up?

Sadly not, you'd have to ask on the community for anyone in the same area to see how their connection preforms

Just sign up and try it out for 28 days cooling off period, if heavy congestion then cancel it before 28 days you won't be charged fee but you have to sent back superhub to VM.

As ADSLMax said, the best way to find out is sign up and test then if no likey cancel within cooling off period, (I've done this a few times before now)

However do confirm the cooling off length.

Most areas are fine so you can definitely roll with it, if it's problematic you have a cooling off period.

The only thing to note is pings on virginmedia are higher. Otherwise it is a very good ISP.

yep best to check the cooling off period length. most are come with 14 days and some are 28 days.

I'm not sure how correct this is but I remeber someone from Virgin telling me that it was 14 days for a solus service (TV/Broadband) and 28 days for Landlines and any bundles of 2 or more services...

That might of just been a failed attempt at trying to scare me into a bundle ::L

Cable broadband with phone line is 28 days cooling off period otherwise standalone cable broadband is 14 days cooling off period

If the area I'm moving to does **not** have the 300mbit homeworker upgrade package available, does it indicate it might be overused and the 200mbit service will suck?

Not really. It means that you are moving to an area with older equipment, that cannot support 16 channels needed for 300Mbps.
