Virgin Media Cable

No complaints about speed with VM for me in Exeter.
25ms Ping; 171.56 Mbps down; 12.32 Mbps up.

Maybe I'm naive, but why must I have a landline with VM when everything is delivered by cable. I can understand why when you have ADSL but not cable.

Yes. also a way to make the upselling of packages appear to be better value.

Spot on. At some point the telephony will use the same coaxial cable the broadband does. Unsure if that'll make a difference to the pricing.

This is already possible. My son (a student) has broadband only form Virgin and uses a Gigaset IP phone and Sipgate for telephony. (Just needed port forwarding in the Virgin router enabled for phone to work.) However, I guess Virgin will retain the separate copper pair telephony for quite a while as it is the only way to allow a standard line powered telephone to work without the need for a local mains supply.
