What was the point?

[link to this post]

Virgin media started cabling lots of streets around my way over a year ago. The online checker at one point said that this would include all the properties in my street. Cables were dug into the footpaths, cabinets stood and all looked good to go.

The checker shows (as it has for many months) that only the first 5 or 6 houses (even numbers) can get VM services. Enquiries to Virgin suggest that the works will eventually be completed although as time goes by this seems less and less likely.

So as the subject asks, what was the point of all this work being carried out for only a few properties?

Someone probably forgot to update something, so probably ready for everyone but computer says no, so it's no.

See if you can have chat with someone at your local Virgin store.

When I moved into my present house, FTTC wasn't available and ADSL speed was dismal but houses near me on both sides had Virgin. However, the Virgin checker said that their service wasn't available at my address. I had an "assertive" discussion with them and they eventually agreed to what they called a "site survey", which was a man walking along the road and noting VM cabinets nearby and old Cabletel-marked access points along the road. He concluded that there would be no issue with providing service, even though the computer said no, and service was duly provided.

So it can be done, despite what the online checker reports.

Virgin Media I believe call this a spotter service. The sales team should be able to arrange for a spotter to go out and check. They might not be aware but if you ask to speak with someone more senior they should have come across it.

However if this is a case of a whole street not being connected you would be better off speaking with construction team to find out more. Some of them are helpful.
