XGS-PON EXMOUTH

i did post earlier but it seems to have disappeared ..!!!

it seems that XGS-PON is now available in Exmouth,,,,,
i have just signed up and install is planned on 22nd feb...
the black pavement boxes and green tubes were installed in pavements in october and i have been daily checking the virgin page for an install option.
nextfibre were due here again next month to do supplementary work that i surmised was to blow fibre between the cabinet at the end of my road to the pavement box outside my home, so i hope my install does go ahead on time despite currently no fibre in the pavement box.

my road was missed by jurassic and i didnt expect fibre before 2026 with OR...

YAY....

If you can order it then the fibre is already there.

They only need to do the final connection to your home.

In Virgins case the fibre isn't there.

In installations with a toby at the edge of the property there's no fibre there, only micro duct. The installers extend the micro duct from the toby to the property then blow fibre from a small local cabinet.

WELL i havent had a change of installation date yet so its looking good, there is so far no fibre to the box in the pavement, i had a look today.

There was a humanoid in a fluorescent jacket with a distance wheel thingy who was walking up the road yesterday so maybe they are checking what length fibre they need here.?

I am keen not to have the fibre nailed up my low garden wall and was planning to bury some suitable green duct into the box does anyone know how the duct to the house is entered into the pavement box??

Will the installer be pleased or annoyed if i have laid the small green duct into the box and to the house??

Surely it’s similar to openreach and they run fibre from a CBT to the home?

I’m not suggesting there’s a fibre cable sat waiting at the end of the toby, but orders can only be placed when there is fibre up to the CBT or equivalent.


VM for me is overhead so the fibre is there on the pole just waiting on on the CBT being activated.

Same story for me, street dug in October, waiting to order...

In deployments where Virgin deploy FTTP underground to a Toby they do not run the fibre before install like Openreach.
They install micro duct (a hollow tube for fibre to be blown down) instead.
On the install day it takes very little time to blow the fibre down the tube.

Virgin don't have CBT's everywhere like Openreach. The fibre is installed from a small cabinet which is a bit like an Openreach CBT and Splitter inside.

You can see in this image inside a Virgin cabinet with the micro duct at the bottom right with individual fibres coming out each.

No idea how they do overhead installs or how much difference there is between RFOG FTTP & their new XGS-PON FTTP rollout but I wouldn't assume there's physical fibre there. It takes very little time to blow it once a customer has ordered.

It might be completely different on poles or Openreach ducts. I just know how they do installs with a Toby and with the "green tubes" (micro duct, like discussed by the OP) as that's what I have.

We have just had nextfibre install starting in our village (virgin only ISP who use them)

The manhole has been dug and cover placed. There is also a tube sticking out of the ground near most of the telegraph poles with a cable inside that just hanging loose.

No work since then so not sure whats happening

Yeah, they've rolled out in a few bits - but nothing close to all of Exmouth, so anyone else reading shouldn't get too excited

It wasn't missed - they're not rolling out in all of Exmouth, and are not likely to. But honestly, they've saved you annoyance. The incompetence and faff of Jurassic isn't worth the effort...

The OR date is also not set in stone - a bit like with Virgin, there are areas of Exmouth with Openreach fibre now that were 2026...

Anything you do to make the installers job quicker and easier they will pleased with.

I had VM fibre installed back in 2018, I dug a trench from under my edge to where I had a pre-installed tube in my wall which went through to my server room. I left a note in the Toby asking the engineer to phone me, and explaining why. He had started to install a box on the front of my house, but then found my note and phoned me. End result I had it installed exactly like I wanted it, he was so happy with what I'd prepared.

Mine is fibre from the cabinet to the external box, where there is a media convertor then coax into the house (RFOG). I'm hoping we get an upgrade to next fibre sooner rather than later, as we are already part fibre.
There are a few pictures here, but basically they blow fibre all the way from the cabinet, they use a 6mm outside dimeter nylon pipe, and the fibre is blown down that.

PS. Just realised this thread is a couple of months old, so you probably have it installed now, well hopefully.
