Moved from Plusnet to Vodafone via City Fibe using Unifi USG

[link to this post]

Moved over from Plusnet which have been a good provider for me, the odd glitch but I stuck it out and overall they have been great for me. My speed to the cabinet is about 50Mb down 9 up as im on an old package think the line speed tops out at 62Mb if I took the full package, they never changed my line back to 40Mb as they said they would. Plusnet Line test IDS on
They stopped line rental saver and mine is coming to an end. The price they have quoted I was moving to was very unimpressive and expect the first bill shortly but then I got an offer to stay with them over an 18 month contract which dropped that price considerably.

Now as City Fibre have been past my house gave Vodafone a look so for £2 less per month I have gone with the 100Mb package Vodafone line test IDS on
Vodafone speed test IPS on
This has been live about 2 hours now.

I have Unifi Equipment as I have gone down route of seperating my network so light bulbs and alexa etc is kept away from my main network, looked to see if I could use my own equipment and it seemed I could.
My USG maxes out at 100Mb by what I read and can't handle anything faster.
I was considering leaving the Vodafone router in place and running through that but wanted to avoid double NAT

Only thing Vodafone failed on was the VLAN ID tag so for others, having found the answer myself before it went live here are the details you need to get your own equipment up and running.

username - [email protected] (xxx is 8 numeric chars)
Password - 8 random chars mixed case
VLAN ID - 911 not the 101 they stated

I'll keep you posted if anything changes but I'm happy with the results so far

edited to include double NAT statement

Have you run a direct ethernet-cabled speed test using the Vodafone supplied router for good measure?

Yes did a test with the supplied router and the results were very similar.
Have run another test tonight but on the wifes laptop which has WIFI only, the upload speed has increased to just under 100Mb but the son is awake now but was off computer when I ran the test.
I prefer doing it when there is only me online.

Now need to port my landline number to a sip account and look to cancel my plusnet line as more than happy with the results so far

I've been toying with getting a pfsence box in the future if I need to upgrade the speed but think I will stick with 100Mb for a while

Yes. You want to be getting the full 100 up and down there. Good luck with it.

Out of interest did you have to ask for un/pwd details or were they already provided?

Also if you do not mind could you post what your renewal price for a contract at Plusnet was and what you paid at Vodafone?

Thanks

I spoke to them via webchat to get the details, considering they know what my connection is they should have given me the correct VLAN ID but I had already seen it on a post in another forum.

Plusnet offered £28 over 18 months, Vodafone came in at £24 over 24 months
Now I've checked it's £4 I'm saving per month, might have got them to drop the price a little more but as I'm getting a speed increase too that was the icing on the cake.

I now need to move my home phone to a sip service, have got one up and running with a temporary number and cancel the line / broadband as my contract with Plusnet is up next month. Did it this way for various reasons mainly to ensure continuity of service. Might cost me a little more this way but the stress involved with having no broadband for the family is worth it

In reply to a post by TAZZ69:
£28/month

Usually Plusnet will match the current price for new customers (excluding any cashback/rewards) so £28 is not a great price. I hope this doesn't mean they are no longer doing this.

Thanks. I am still waiting for FTTP but are preparing.

Would be interested to know who you decide for VOIP also let us know how the porting goes and how Plusnet performs especially on the final billing.

You probably know but there is a VOIP forum if you have any specific problems/queries.

Thought I'd post a little update.
My Mum had her broadband up for renewal so called and was offered a poor deal and when she said what I was paying for FTTP and she was still on ADSL, the rep thought she was on FFTC and then offered to upgrade her to FTTC for I think £22 a month.

I set up a Sip account with sipgate basic and the number should move over next week, I have setup the free number they give you on my mobile, just need to setup my home phone number on my mobile once the change happens, this will be ideal when it goes through as there will be no line rental and no one will know I am using my mobile to get calls to my home phone.

Will ask on the VOIP forum about adaptors if I want to use the home phone in the house using my current handset.

I've recently ported my line from JohnLewis broadband (PlusNet) to Sipgate Basic.
The whole process was smooth, though PlusNet took a while (about a month) to send a cheque for the closing balance on my account.

It's a really nice feeling to no longer feel "tied" to a physical landline. Good luck with the port.
