ONT Etc

[link to this post]

Im eventually having full fibre installed soon and was wondering if the ONT/Router can be put wherever you want it, I’m thinking of having it installed in my bedroom so I can have direct access to the router via ethernet instead of using Wi-Fi as don’t see the point in getting fast speeds if then gonna connect via Wi-Fi so wanted to go direct, is this possible or will they only install it downstairs etc?. Thanks.

It depends on the engineer you get on the day but the general rule is anywhere your like within 10m of the CSP.

There are 2 types of advanced installs that can be purchased that give much more flexibility on where you would like the ONT installed (1 is up to 100m from the CSP) but the installation cost is a bit higher and not all providers will support ordering them.

As someone who made this mistake, get it as central as you can, you dont want to be be running a extensive mesh wifi layout because of the ONT

It was free installation and I had no option for anything else, I guess I’ll just have to speak to the install people on the day, what is the CSP exactly?.

Thanks but I only need it for the bedroom devices and want them all wired, we still have fibre installed currently and that’s being used downstairs where the router is, I’m literally ordering FTTP for my own use only and to be used in my bedroom wired for my devices, if I had it installed downstairs it’ll be a case of using Wi-Fi like I’m doing now which I’d rather not do, or running a long ethernet cable upstairs etc.

Are you an overhead or underground feed for your phone line currently?

Underground but the cityfibre installation will be via the pole, it’s a long story but yeah installation will be using the pole.

Actual Openreach engineers (not necessarily contractors) are usually quite accommodating with these matters.

However as this is a CityFibre-based install, its not clear to me how typically accommodating their subbies are. If they want shot quickly they will probably just says 'sorry...no'

See how you get on with the installer on the day, as said.

BTW - curious - why did you post this in the Vodafone forum? Thought you posted earlier today that you had ordered Air Broadband over CF, not Vodafone.
