Port number into VoIp - keep BT landline

[link to this post]

Companies offering to port number into their VoIP system (from BT) seem to simultaneously cause the cancellation of the BT landline when they request the port from BT
Anyone know if simultaneous port and renumber is possible i.e. leave the landline active and get a new number issued by BT, and the original number ends up in VoIp system?

BT say it can only be done if you get a renumber first , then the original number goes into the "pool of available numbers" - where it is available to be ported. But it then loses its associated BT account number (which the VoIp provider says it needs in order to port the number!)

scenario - want to keep BT landline for broadband but want landline number porting into Cenrtrex system. Dont want to have to reapply for a landline and have downtime.

Hi,

I believe you can't port a BT number without losing the line itself and any associated services including DSL you may have on it.

The only solution I have seen is to order a new BT line for DSL before you request the port. Once you have the new line and DSL then you can port the number. It is not cost effective, you end up with a BT voice circuit you may not want and its a pain. However that's where we are and I know no other way of doing it.

Regards

Jon

A simultaneous port and renumber is possible if you have the right people within BT to talk to. We do this for many of our clients.

Does this allow you to keep existing services such as xDSL?

I understood this was possible if you are an LLU provider, but not if you are just offering VoIP services.
i.e. a VoIP provider wants to take the number, whereas the customer wants to keep the landline for ADSL. The customer is happy to have calls via VoIp and so is not bothered what the new landline number is.

I spoke at lengtht with the porting department at BT and was told this was not possible.

The VoIp provider I dealt with (who use Gamma Telecom) said they can only request a "port and cease"

I assume Be do this for SMPF?

Hello, rather than going through the pain of porting/renumbering, why not get a Sipura IP phone adapter (or similar product) and route incoming calls on the BT line into your VoIP system?

>>route incoming calls on the BT line into your VoIP system?

would the VoIP user not have to pay for the incoming calls?
