VoIP provider opinion

[link to this post]

Now that Sipgate do not take new customers at old rates, I am thinking of Number People or Voipfone.

Are there users of these services and what is your opinion please?

Depend on the calls you will make - do you want to pay a monthly fee and get very cheap calls, or no fee and more expensive calls?

I would also suggest looking at VoIPify and check out what calls may cost you with them.

Planning to have FTTP installed for the first time. I was thinking of having the ONT located in the Garage where there are enough power points.

Can I then run an Ethernet connection about 10 metres away to my study where the Router will be located?

I have had Voipfone for the past 7 years. They have been fine. I don't make many calls. They have good support and were able to get my Cisco SPA112 to connect to them after I gave them remote access. They deleted the SIP ToS/DiffServ parameter. Not something that can be done with a Gigaset N300.

I do not use Voipfone myself but they do look OK and they were on my alternative provider list before I chose Voipify.

The Trustpilot reviews for Voipfone mostly seem to be OK;

https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.voipfone.co.uk

Looking at the Voipfone website it seems that you need to pay an additional £3.00 for a local 01 or 02 phone number as only a 056 number is free and I prefer a local phone number.

Personally I found the Voipfone calls price calculation difficult to assess as it seemed that you needed to input the exact phone number and location details into boxes to see the unit cost per minute for each call but for the UK number that I checked it is said it would cost 1p per minute for the UK number that I checked which is around double the Voipify unit cost per minute but is still OK.

Fido

Been with Voipfone for a year now. Haven't used it much yet but I'm on the point of porting my landline number to them. Service has been fine, and support has been exemplary on the few occasions I've needed to contact them. If you just have a basic service with no frills there's no monthly charge, you just pay for calls.

If you can create a circle of friends and family also using Voipfone and capitalise on their referral program, then your phone bill from Voipfone with a regular line number will be quite low of just a few pounds each month. As a bonus you have free calls to any other subscriber to their platform.

It is free to call their support desk with no IVR to navigate and while their phone support is limited to business hours, firing off an email at some unsocial hour will usually see a response before their phone lines open again.

If you use their building blocks to create a complex setup you will find that that the price for extensions really hurts and their call rates to mobile phones are not as competitive as they should be.

I have not found any feature desired as not being possible except for carrier pre-selected which is limited to BT subscribers.
