Changing VOIP supplier

Is changing VOIP supplier as simple as changing from a "normal" phone provider?

What's the best deal(s) around ATM? I'm currently with voipfone.co.uk who have been very good, but think it might be time for a change.

You just sign up with a new provider and input the SIP credentials into your SIP Phone or ATA.

If the providers are both ITSPA members, in theory, you should be able to port your number with ease, but i've never done it myself so don't know how well it works in reality.

Localphone is what i use for my main provider with an old Orbtalk PAYG account for backup inbound calls. Localphone is very much a budget provider but i've had few problems with them over the years and like the way i can assign local numbers to contacts that can then be called from my mobile at Localphone rates.

I emailed sipgate (seen a few posts down) and they mentioned featureline, which I'm not familliar with.

Would be nice to get some replies from people who have done this before I "jump".

Changing a VOIP provider is nothing like changing a landline provider. Like mobile phones, you don't have to jump VOIP ship at all to try another provider. Just sign up with another and use it by entering details into whatever you use. You can then always switch from one to another. I find Sipgate very good and their numbers are free.

Perhaps I didn't give enough info on my first post?

My number was originally an NTL/Virgin Media one that got ported to BT then back to Virgin, then over to Voipfone. It's this number I want to port, not so much the calls.

Yes, it is quite easy to get your number ported to another PBX VOIP provider. I have also ported my number to The Real PBX and it is working well without any issues. So, this process is simple and does not involve any complications unless you have signed some sort of agreement with your previous VOIP provider and they create any issue

Apparently the number has to be active and as my current provider still haven't had payment from my bank (bank say it was a system error) they have expired the number!

Even if your number is not active, there is no necessity that you use the same number. You can get a new number from your new VOIP provider and use that for calling. Porting your number is not the only option in case you feel that the previous number is not so important. So, even if they terminate the service, the new VOIP provider provides you with a free number that you can use for calling. So, why worry about the old one?

All my contacts have it as my telephone number.

All sorted now anyway, thanks.

Old provider was good enough to give me a further 14 days to sort things out. Think I'll still use them for calls and just use the new provider to host my telephone number.
