You need to setup extensions and at least inbound routes and outbound routes.
The N300A is then signed in as as extension on FreePBX/Asterisk

I had some background/experience in enterprise comms/voice so the concepts to me were quite straightforward, but yes otherwise you will need to spend a bit of time getting familiar with the principles of a voice exchange; including trunks, endpoints/extensions, call routing, etc. It can be a whole other world. Fun though

I’ve worked for 20 years in IT as support and then development and I still ove the little home projects and networking etc. Which can be pretty fun (when they work).

Resurrecting this thread to ask if you got anywhere with this? I signed up to Sipgate Basic, and while the wording in their documentation seems to suggest that you can hook in an instance of FreePBX/Asterisk using the Basic plan, the Trunk option is missing from the control panel. I tried following the guide anyway but can't seem to get it to register.
I don't know if I'm missing something with the incoming ports I've opened or if the account simply doesn't allow trunks to be registered...

I didn't pursue it to be honest, so can't really help, sorry.
The main reason was for call blocking / monitoring - but it seems we're getting so few spam calls that it's not necessary, plus the block list on Sipgate's site is easy to add numbers to.

That's a shame. I'm trying to do it for similar reasons, but I want to send spam calls straight to Lenny instead of block them entirely, and then have a good laugh at the recordings later.

You set it up from within FPBX/Asterisk as an trunk - same deets as per usual. You will need to configure inbound and outbound routes. Bit if a learning curve if you’re new to it all.
Have you setup Sipgate on a simple softphone first to check the deets?

Keep going it’s good fun! Took me a few months to hack about and patch Asterisk to do video calls using Cisco 9971 handsets. When I got it working it was a wow moment. That was 2012/13 though and those handsets seem a bit dated now.
Plenty of good SIP phones out there now for reasonable money.
