Re: Grandstream HT-801 ATA - phone doesn't work.....

That’s how I read the pin out from the leads-direct website. They’re good folks there, I have bought a lot of custom power leads from them in the past. They would have it back if it doesn’t work (to be honest postage to/from would be more than the worth of the lead).

I have a stash of RJ plugs and my trusty registered jack crimp tool just for this sort of stuff, admittedly it’s not had an outing lately. Sometimes easier to make up your own leads sometimes than go hunting for them.

The other thing to do would be to use an ‘US to UK’ adapter lead - which has the centre pins on the RJ11 plug going to pins 2 & 5 on a BT socket. Then just use a straight-through BT plug to RJ11 lead to the handset.

Thanks to you both!

My first BT adapter turned up early this morning and I talked to the seller who made the changes you recommended, after some initial setting changes on the ATA, I now have a dial tone and I can dial out also.

My incoming number isn't active yet but I can now use my very old phones! Thanks!

I am having trouble too - I am currently waiting for Openreach to install my fibre connection.
I have an HT801 connected to a BT Converse 2200 phone - using a 431a phone doubler socket to link and rj11 - 431a straight through to a 431a - rj11 2x3 and 4x5 cable so effectively the same cable you mention.
I can call out to test the phone, can receive calls but, the phone does not ring! The HT801 web interface says it is ringing but the phone is silent - I can answer the call all is great but what is wrong with my cable to stop it ringing? I can make up a cable and happy to do so. The end position will be when fibre is installed and BT phone line disconnected I want to plug an rj11 to 431a cable into a socket on my internal phone lines and be able to use my phones/alarm system dialer!
Any ideas how I can wire this up correctly? I cannot find out how the HT801 FXS port is wired to resolve it!

Thank you in advance for you help

My gues is that a BT Converse 2200 phone needs three connections rather than the more modern two. This is because the "ring capacitor" is located in the expected BT Master Socket rather than in the phone (as is done with 2-wire phones.

If hardwiring, fit a Master Socket, alternatively a RJ11 to BT431A adapter, but one with a built in capacitor for this very purpose.

However, be aware that some RJ11 to BT431A adapters which although sold with a capacitor, have not had one fitted. Caused me a fair bit of confusion when setting up my VOIP.

An eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393179648610?hash=item5b8... looks promising, but I cannot guarantee that there is actually a capacitor fitted.

Cheers!

Marvellous so when I disconnect the BT landline the capacitor in the master socket will allow my phone to ring when the HT801 is patched into the extension socket? Must have an old master type socket lying around somewhere to test!

Yes, should do. If you connect the two centre wires from the RJ11 plug that is in the ATA to 2 & 5 of ether the Master Socket or Slave socket, or even the two terminals A&B that the BT line went into on the Master socket (assuming an NTE type). Whichever is easiest.

Cheers!

Many thanks, BT master socket wired with a cable with RJ11 on the end - pins 4-3 connected to A and B plugged into the HT801, phone plugged into the socket and hey presto a working VoIP system! All ready for BT to install fibre and keep the alarm working!

keep the alarm working!
Didn't think people still used diallers for their alarms, very 1980's

If you have a cable adaptor without the necessary ringing capacitor a lash up solution is to plug one of the old adsl filters that everyone has in a drawer somewhere between the cable adapter and the phone. I guess the adsl filters must have a ringing capacitor in them.
