FTTP Broadband - Router with ATA adapter

[link to this post]

Hello everyone,

I am contemplating changing from Virgin to a Full Fibre ISP. I like Aquiss but they don't offer any phone service. They recommend the TP Link routers and the AX55 looks quite good but it doesn't include an ATA adapter. If I want to keep my landline number and analogue phones, is there a good router out there that includes an ATA adaptor or do I need to buy two separate devices? The Andrew and Arnold VOIP provider looks good value if, like me, you are interested in incoming calls.
Thank you very much 😊

The Gigaset N300 with Gigaset phones is quite a good option and will work with many VOIP service providers. A landline can be connected to an N300. Porting the landline to a VOIP service provider will probably be cheaper as you would avoid paying for the line rental and the calls will be cheaper.

The only problem with VOIP calls using an N300 is that they don't tend to work in a power cut. Mobile phones may well work in a power cut - if they can receive a signal!

I believe the FritzBox! routers have ATAs, I haven't used them myself. But I think a separate ATA is preferable as it gives you more flexibility over choosing the router.

In my case, I got rid of the analogue phones and bought Acrobits Softphone instead, and installed it on our mobile phones. It's a one-time payment of around £6 (and if you have Family Sharing you can all install it). Using push notifications, it means that it doesn't drain the battery when idle.

If you prefer a physical handset / speakerphone, then another option is to buy a VOIP desktop phone, connected via ethernet or wifi. This will typically allow you to do things which an ATA can't, like receive multiple inbound calls and switch between them - or for one person to make an outgoing call while another receives incoming.

A&A have two Technicolor devices with FXS port(s)

They have their firmware installed and I believe it is difficult to remove (as stated by A&A on a telephone call/ email) so i would only use with their service.

Of course, you could source elsewhere with standard firmware

Technicolor DGA4134, I got one supplied by Giganet and the telephone adapter built-in works great. I use it with AAISP VoIP service, no problems at all.

Not the cheapest router but not too bad and you can usually find one on ebay if you don't mind buying used.
